Fried Chicken at Mom's Bar-B-Q House (Van Nuys)

chrishei Feb 11, 2014 01:41 PM

Anyone been in the last few years? I have some freelance work to do in the valley, and wanted to knock a fried chicken joint off my to-cluck list (although I know they're mainly a BBQ joint - any good on that end as well?).

I thought the chicken was OK.

You should grab some of their sticky sweet sauce BBQ beef ribs, which I've always had a soft spot for (but this is no way cue like say BigMista, or Bludso's compton, PHillip's etc), get some greens and potato salad to go with it.

And then grab a side of gumbo while you are at it.

Most importantly, get a slice each of their dunccan hines style yellow layer cake and coconut layer cake, both last time i checked was 1.75 a pop per slice, a whole cake is something ridiculous like 9 bucks.

    homey, rec room atmosphere.

and while you are in the area, do a a bbq taste within about a 2.5 mile drive at Swinging Door BBQ, which is all the way on the other side of vanowen.

I thought the chicken was good and was planning on coming back for fried fish Friday. They fry it for you so it takes forever while you are sitting at the table drooling. I also thought....next time I'd better plan ahead and call this in. Yes very home style and recommended.

Yeah, unless you phone in an order, you'll wait a while because it's fried to order. Everything we've had there has been fantastic. Mrs. G says their chicken is way better than KFC. I loved their meatloaf and had it every Tuesday until it got too expensive for the portion. At one time they also had chicken livers which I loved. The beef ribs are good but not as meaty as Roma's. I loved the beef and pork sandwiches, their beans and potato salad, which, I think, is not homemade.
The next time you go would you please do me a favor? Please tell Steve, the big guy in back, or the shorter guy in front (IIRC, his name is Vincent) that "Bob", the white haired older guy with the raspy voice, misses them and hasn't been in because he moved to Las Vegas.

Probably won't happen, kevin. It's too much of a trip for us these days. It would have to be an unavoidable family thing for us to go there.

That you better hit up DeMarco's in Vegas, as well as the Lotus, which everyone has probably told you about ten times over.

Just asked my brother about the fried chicken. (When I go to Mom's, I always eat beef) He's had it several times and he said it was really good. I love the place and often get one of Mom's whole chocolate cakes for my birthday cake. Enjoy!

I tried it a couple of years ago. I thought the chicken was great. The sweet Mac n cheese, not so much. If I lived close to it, I'd be 500lbs.

Yeah it's a good thing good fried chicken places aren't really close to where I live, or else I'd be 500 lbs. too (I can finish 10+ pieces like it's nothing).

I just saw this thread and, ironically, got takeout from Mom's for the first time in a few years. The fried chicken was fantastic -- with a nice crust with good flavor, but extremely moist inside.

I was less impressed with the pork ribs and the hot links. The ribs just didn't have much flavor and the links were not spicy enough for me (Roger's in Northridge has great links). The greens were great -- and I normally don't love greens -- and I enjoyed the baked beans and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese has a little sweetness so I can understand why not everyone will like it, but I thought it was pretty good.

Agreed. Mom's chicken is good, very moist. Parking is problematic. And I love Roger's rib tips.

this was my experience with the chicken too. Regarding the Mac n cheese, if I knew ahead of time it was sweet, I may have liked it. I wasn't prepared for the sweetness.
