Some weird dude posting weird creepy spam all over the place.

  1. sunshine842 Feb 11, 2014 04:58 AM

How about a link or location? I've been looking around haven't noticed anything, just yelling at the mods does little to help the situation. Did you flag them?

The mods have attended to the weirdness - all the spam is gone now.

The mods really do a great job. I flagged some of that spam (and I bet I wasn't the only one), and it quickly disappeared. Yay for the mods!

yes, they're very quick on the spam, and less and less of it gets through.

Also, it is helpful to not respond to spam so it drifts off the first page, until the mods can eradicate it. Don't bump it!

I cleaned up some Spam just last night. Of course it was Spam Omusubi...but I cleaned up every last bit of it like the good, immoderator hound I am.

Just as a note, it's enough to Flag one spam from each spammer. Once we see that it's spam, we'll take care of the rest. No need to go through and Flag multiple posts from the same poster.

I flagged a lot of SPAM last night around 10pm to 12am Pacific Time (I'm in California). All of it seemed to be SPAM about psychic stuff with a phone number starting with +91, which is a international calling code for India. That would be about 10am to Noon in India when the spammer is posting. If the Chow mods are on the U.S. east coast, that would be 1am to 3am U.S. eastern time. There may be few or no mods on duty in the middle of the night and the SPAM stays around for a while until the mods come on duty.

Yep. We deal with it as quickly as we can, but we don't have 24 hour coverage on the site. Fortunately, some of our volunteers are early risers, so I got a wake-up call to come help just before six this morning, and we were able to get it cleaned up fairly early.

Sorry - it was tongue-in-cheek. I wasn't actually yelling at you. I was flagging them as fast as they popped up and I didn't know it wasn't necessary to flag each of them. I actually thought it would be helpful to you (making it easier to find them). I have now been duly chastised by the Emperor of Chowhound, a self-appointed unofficial mod. However, I do apologize to the actual mods.

To be clear, it's not a problem for us if you Flag more than one post by a given username. It's just extra work on your part, and I didn't want posters to feel like they needed to go through each spam individually flagging them in order to help us out.

And I wasn't at all offended by your post -- I could tell it was meant to be funny, not mean. Even in my recently dragged out of bed fog, that was clear ;)

It's a free internet forum with volunteer mods who are mostly based in a couple time zones. The spam was posted in a completely different time zone. The mods are human and need to sleep. They responded fast enough, there is no need to panic. The posts can't infiltrate your computer or bank. They were obviously spam, just don't click on the links and ignore them.

Only here because an OP was started.

Saw the issue on the main CH page but didn't open them. Should I? I thought this OP which Jacq is following closely was enough notice at this point.

The best way to alert the mods to the presence of the spam is to simply flag it. In all cases.

It's gone. Generally on well traveled boards like SF or LA or Manhattan you can be sure it will be reported through the "flag" button by someone. But on boards that don't get so much traffic it's always best to flag it.

There's not really any danger in opening spam posts to Flag them -- you might see some words or even images you'd rather not, but unlike email, there isn't the possibility that spam here will contain malicious code that'll execute when you open it.

I don't recommend you click on any of the links in a spam message, because they could lead to sites that are a problem, but simply opening the spam on Chowhound to Flag it for us isn't an issue, and will let us know about it a lot more quickly than posting on Site Talk.

Will do. I wasn't afraid to open the OP. I just happened to be in Site Topics reading another thread I clicked on from the Main page and multi-tasked.

But, I will flag only from this point forward.

I don't know if you recall what happened in the old Jim & Bob days when the site bombing would run for an entire page or more until the clean up could be accomplished. Now the "defacing" (with the registration process and other counter measures that the site has taken against these idiots) is so much less annoying it's great.

I've made a tin foil hat to protect me from the spammers. Now not matter what happens I am protected and they cannot do any brain scan's on me. I also molded one for my neighbors cat just in case, we are both protected.

So just out of curiosity......I assume you find the spam, deactivate the account associated with it, then they are rejoining/registering to re-spam? Kind of labor intensive on their behalf........?? I could see if it was remotely food related but voodoo/black magic, from what I've seen is such a random thing to spam about.

Keep up the good work kiddo! Once the Jr board goes up I will protect my boarders from spammers!!! Till then I'm sticking with the tin foil hat!!

probably -- since it appears to be an Indian spammer, the chance for a mistranslation of the word "spirit" is pretty high!
