Where to get wild mushrooms?

lamb_da_calculus Feb 9, 2014 11:44 AM

If I want to buy a variety of wild mushrooms (to cook with, not from a restaurant) are there any particularly good places in the city to do so? Whole Foods can be okay but I've never, for example, seen black trumpet mushrooms for sale anywhere in the city. On the other hand restaurants serve them regularly so I imagine somebody has them.

Many Asian groceries have a wide variety of mushrooms, as do farmers' markets.

Fresh Farms and HMart in Niles, Tai Nam on Argyle and Lawrence in the city sell different varieties of mushrooms depending on the season. Treasure Island in Lakeview and Lincoln Park have different ones as well.

Green City Market has a mushroom grower/vendor called River Valley. They recently opened a physical location on Wilson and Ravenswood.

In summertime the Division Street Farmers' Market has a mushroom vendor with many varieties.

Whole Foods carries some very interesting varieties, but mostly around the holidays. Perhaps they could order some for you.
