  1. Niles, sorry, I just asked Charles Yu about a Chowmeet this year and then saw your post. Is Charles going to be present as well, I've always wanted to meet him.

Sorry M.Gomez. I won't be in Hong Kong this year till around November! However, I would suggest you joining Nilecable Chowmeet. We have been eating together for the past few years! Nice chap from Austria!! Very knowledgeable!! Sweet and Sour Pork plus Chinese dessert expert! Ha!!

      1. re: Charles Yu

Thank you, Charles. We shall see - we were hoping to catch up with you. I would have made last year's Chowmeet if not for my husband's minor surgery. He's Cantonese and would have enjoyed discussing food with someone like you. Anyway, the doctors have advised DH to cut down on sugary stuff, so sweet sour pork and Chinese desserts sound pretty sinful now!

      2. re: M_Gomez

As Charles already said, sadly he will not come to HK this March. But you would be highly welcome to join our little group. And the meal will not be centered around s/s pork and Chinese desserts, don't worry.

In the Chowmeets I plan, I always ask the chosen restaurant to create a menu with their signature dishes, which would mean crispy chicken, lotus leaf rice and roast suckling pig. I already contacted them and am now waiting for their menu suggestion.

If you want, just drop me a mail and I will keep you in the loop so that you can decide if you want to join in.

            1. re: NilesCable

I'll check my lottery ticket tomorrow night! If I win the jackpot, you'll see me there for sure and we can follow it up by having another round of 'desserts run;Ha!!!!

                1. re: NilesCable

I can tell you in an hour's time!! Don't think I am THAT lucky though!! May be $10 consolation price?! Ha!!

            1. re: Uncle Yabai

Yum yum yum indeed! A most fine meal, buurp... Tomorrow they will be serving double-boiled gweilo...

              1. re: Uncle Yabai

Wish I could be with you guys! Hope someone will post photos?!

                1. re: Charles Yu

Charles, I am sorry to say that I forgot to change the battery in my camera, so I only got to make a photo of the piglet. But the meal was quite excellent indeed.

Seventh Son is a very hot tip to go to in HK. From the Chowmeets I attended in HK definetly the best one with last years Elite Dining location in iSquare a strong runner up, but they changed the set-up there now, so wonder if it is still as strong.

                  1. re: NilesCable

Auntie came close to ruining Niles' camera, so if it wasn't the battery it would have been a technical failure either way.

                    1. re: Uncle Yabai

Remind me next year to NOT sit too close to you two. ;)

                2. re: Uncle Yabai

Yes very good indeed - a big thank you to Niles for organising. Best dishes - loved the beef and the crab/egg dish - the beef big but meltingly soft. The crab delicate and complex.

                  1. re: PhilD

Beef was excellent. The piglet skin was outstanding. Even the simple mushroom soup and the seasonal asparagus were great.

                    1. re: Uncle Yabai

The dessert was also fantastic, especially the coconut cubes, have to find a recipe on how to do that.

                      1. re: NilesCable

Man!! You guys are KILLING me!!!
@ Nilescable - my friend! Knowing you after all these years, ALL desserts to you taste fantastic!! Ha!!
Yes, I suspect the piglet skins will be great since the chef was initiailly from FLM which the piglet is their forte!
Pity, my lottery ticket didn't win!! Sigh!!

                        1. re: Charles Yu

That's not true Charles, not all desserts taste fantastic to me, only those, that really are. But you are right that I am a dessert lover, what better way to end a good meal than with a perfect dessert.

                          1. re: NilesCable

How many mango and ginger milk desserts did you have on this trip? Sweet & Sour pork too?!

                            1. re: Charles Yu

One Ginger Milk until now only (but will have at least one more before I fly home on Friday) and two S&S pork, one great at Above and Beyond, one very poor rendition in Foshan at a Hong Kong style restaurant. They added Mango and no Pineapple, Onion or Bell Peppers. BELCH. I am thinking of having another good one Thursday evening or Friday Noon at the place where we had it together last year in Central. ;)

And today I had a dessert I didn't like that much, some kind of rice-sugar cake, very spongy with not much taste of anything. My hosts here in Mainland are taking me to very mediocre restaurants this year, didn't have anything outstanding until now, best was some Geoduck clam sashimi today. Otherwise I have to say that for Foshan region, most HK hole-in-wall beats the Restaurants here.

                              1. re: NilesCable

Geoduck Clams!! Cool! Love it!! Used to cost only $3-$4 per pound years ago. Now, with mainland Chinese becoming more affluent, Canada is shipping all the Grade A to China and Japan. Price is around $38 per pound nowadays!! Better than investing in Real Estates or Stock Market! Ha!
Pay me a visit in Toronto and I'll treat you to a Geoduck Clam and Giant Lobster 4 ways dinner!! - With an awesome 'Mango Mochi dessert' to end things!!

                                1. re: Charles Yu

So, now how to reason back home that I have to go to Toronto ;)

                                  1. re: NilesCable

Second Honeymoon or education trip with your kids? BTW, Niagara fall is near by!!
