Expired Yogurt Starter

al b. darned Jan 28, 2014 06:58 PM

We just found a couple of packets of yogurt starter in the back of the freezer that expired a little over a year ago.

I'm looking for anyone with experience using expired starter. Does the fact that it been frozen all this time make a difference? If I use it will my yogurt come out runny? Or will it even set up at all?

"expiration" dates are most often a "sell by" date. live cultures aren't always as hardy once frozen, but try a small batch and see what happens.

if the yogurt comes out runny you can always strain it, a la "greek" yogurt.

if you've had it in the freezer, it's probably still fine.

I've used yeast way, way past its expiration -- but I keep it in the freezer.
