Happy Hour = Detroit area - DTW

  • 4

So we're starting a thread to get a good listing of happy hours the Motown hounds like: I'll start -

Townhouse in Birmingham
3/20 - drinks/apps -- Good wine, really good apps, esp. crispy Brussels sprouts, truffled fries, fried manchego cheese, lots of windows, nice views of B'ham Pierce St.

Big Rock in Birmingham -
$2-4 drinks (not great but, hey..) good apps also $3-$5, calamari is especially good. A grand interior, beautiful bar area - outdoor area is wonderful in warmer weather with lots of flowers, open air.

Check websites for availability, generally weekdays from 4 - 7.

  1. Roast, in the Westin Book Cadillac hotel, has an exceptional (if not the best) Cocktail Hour (what they call Happy Hour) both in terms of food and beverage. I'm not much of a drinker of beer or wine, but their specials are impressive in those areas.

To me, though, the reason to go there during Cocktail Hour (4-7PM M-F, food from 4:30-6:30PM) is the food. You need look no further than their ridiculously good burger with bacon, cheese, and a fried egg on an english muffin for a bun. At $4, there is no better definition of the word "steal". Their stuffed peppers, also $4, are wonderful as well. There ain't much to go wrong with this menu, really.

One caveat: this fantastic experience is available ONLY AT THE BAR. Seats/space is very much at a premium, even on a normal day. Throw in an event downtown, and it's nigh impossible for any more than one person to sit down together. Get there early.

Terrific way to dip one's toe in the water with this place, if you will.

+1. Something to keep in mind if you're downtown at about 4:15.

In Ann Arbor, try the Earle on Washington. Mussels done right for $2.75 an order from 5 to 6:30; discounts on drinks and other wine bar menu items.

And how many Mussels would that be, Jim?

          I don't know exactly—it's a small plate of them, maybe 15.
