Trader Joe's new app

Leepa Jan 28, 2014 10:20 AM

Just downloaded it today. It's not much so far, but I have high hopes for a shopping list feature. What else would you like to see?

I'd love to see special or new items available in my store on there.

They do have new or featured items but not store specific, not many, at this point.

For my fellow Android users, the app is "soon" to be forthcoming. In the meantime, you can gather more details here:

I'm trying to figure out the point of the app. They were promoting it in the store today but I still don't get it.

It is pretty limited. I'm hoping it grows into something more.

My sentiments exactly... What's the point of it? I've explored every nook of it and still don't know what it DOES.

All i could figure is that is "does" suck memory from my phone for an app that isn't actually useful!!

            Here's what I want -

            1. I'd like it to have a list of every product that they sell, with the price, and the ability to select from the list to create a personal shopping list. I'd also like it to store all of the items from my previous shopping lists so that I can quickly select from my regular items.

            2. I'd like the ability to post ratings and reviews for each product, Yelp-style, so that I can see which products are most highly rated and why.

That's all! Seems easy - I hope they take my suggestions. =)

This plus whether they have it in my local store!

I wish they would allow for rating of there products but would be a little surprised if they opened themselves up to negative comments. How helpful though would it be for them to know the negative comments regarding a particular item so that they can make a judgment whether to keep a product on their shelves!

You can do both. If you open one of the featured products, like the heart shaped Neufchatel cheese, they have as of now 117 "hearts" and 13 comments. You have to sign in to leave comments or ratings.

Ah, good to know. I am looking forward to being able to use it once they make it compatible for other devices.

Easier said than done. Each region has access to different products/price points and each store has the option of carrying items or not. Also, items change out so frequently it would take a good sized team in each region to keep on top of things.

I wish they waited until all platforms were supported and it actually did something useful. Kinda embarrassing on Launch Day when folks were treated to App-etizers (groan) and they wanted us to talk it up but didn't explain what it did.

But each store must have a computerized inventory system, right? So, in theory, if they connected the app to their inventory system and the app user selected which store they wanted to shop at, it shouldn't be any additional effort for them - and it would be so cool for us!

They must, because they are always willing to look something up for you when you ask for something that's missing on the shelf. Then they disappear into the back room and report that it'll be there tomorrow morning or that afternoon. If the app told me that ahead of time, I would just come in then. Their ordering system is terrible because I always shop first thing in the morning and they are always out of stuff. The worst is that they cover up the spot with other product instead of just leaving the spot so you can see right away that it's out of stock.

Got a response to my suggestions. It won't hurt to make your own!

"Thanks for trying out our app, and thanks for the helpful & constructive feedback. As you can see, our App is definitely in its infancy, so your suggestions are particularly helpful at this stage in the game. We will definitely take your comments into consideration, and we hope you will continue to use it as we slowly but surely continue to improve it."

They should have waited until they had a more useful app rather than putting this skeleton online.

I don't find the app useful. In addition to a shopping list that others have mentioned, I would like to be able to see if a product is currently available in my local store. I love my store and the employees but all too often I am told that a product I am looking for will be there the next morning or on the truck that afternoon. The hospital I work at is 2 miles down the road so I can pop in either before or after work easily, but since this is the only TJ's in at least a 50 mile radius, there have to be customers who drive quite a distance only to be disappointed. I know this isn't impossible because employees are able to cheerfully look up the status of a product for you on demand, and some other retailers have a feature that shows how many units of a particular item is left in stock. (Or else they just need to do a better job of placing orders, particularly with produce and cheese)!

From what I understand this app is just a jump off point for what they intend for it to eventually be. Why not email them at the address elsewhere in the thread with your suggestions? the more people who make the suggestions the more likely they are to listen and make them happen.

I am frustrated.. because they removed the 'New Items' page on the website.. due to "the app." I do not have a SMART phone.. therefore, I suppose I will no longer know the new items since their e-flyer comes out only every few months.

Oh, is that where it went? I actually was trying to find it last night. It's weird they would remove it since the app isn't even compatible with all Smart phones.

GraceW I also was annoyed that they took away that page from their website. Good news is that they just added it back if you scroll across the front row you will see Home then Products then Dig In. They are putting their new items now under the Dig In page...just discovered this myself last night.

Thank you so much!!! I never would have thought "Dig In" meant "New Products"...
