Smelt on the menu?
We had the smelt special at Peteys in Rye a couple of years ago, but don't remember when. Anyone know when it's in season here, and where, besides Peteys, they might have it?
Fisherman's Catch in Wells, ME, had it on the menu. I believe it was last May. It was very fresh and appetizing-looking, but fishy.
Petey's is the only place I've seen fresh local smelts on the menu in NH, and even for them it is a "special"--so call ahead if you are making a special trip. Usually local smelts are in season winter through early spring (i.e. Nov-March/April).
Wood's Restaurant on the pier in Plymouth Mass. sometimes has them on the menu. But again, call ahead to be sure.
Courthouse Fish Market in East Cambridge always has them, but theirs are the Canadian product, not the local ones.
There's a huge difference in flavor between the local brackish/salt water New England smelts, and the Great Lakes fresh water product from Canada I'd take the New England product any day, but it is getting harder and harder to find, as far as I know, nobody around here fishes for it commercially any more. Petey's gets it because one of the owner's sons catches them!
