raised or cake ????? Which kind of gal or guy are you ????

  • k

Also, where ?

You can tell a lot about a person based on whether one is a raised donut or cake donut type of person.

  1. Come on Kev. I am both so I am *bi*:)

    1. Cake all the way. buttermilk bar from Primo's on Sawtelle. Or Schatz's bakery in Mammoth (not the one in Bishop), but that's not in LA.

      1. Cake!

My only time LA (back in 2004) I only had time to try Kindle's, which I quite liked. Rapberry filled cake donut. Drool.

Would love to get back and try more in the not-too-distant future.

        1. kevin, what are you? Cake or raised? And where do you enjoy a good donut?

          1. Definitely raised. Light texture with the crispiest possible fry on the outside.

            1. I've been on a French Cruller kick lately--with maple frosting. I go either to Spudnuts in Northridge or Earl's in Chatsworth.

                1. Raised; cake is too heavy.

                  1. Unquestionably the unglazed buttermilk from Stan's in Westwood. Of course, if he has Blueberry Crisps that day, I could be at risk for stepping on my tongue.

                    1. Cake is just for your birthday, raised for the other 364 days of the year.

                      1. Raised, and only raised! Glazed or filled with "custard" and glazed with chocolate, or glazed topped with coconut. My favorite donut stand, here in the Valley, is Blinkies.

                        1. The key is it has to come straight out of the fryer. A fresh hot glazed should melt in your mouth as you bite into it. Cold donuts just aren't the same thing at all.

I get my fix at California Donut on 4th & New Hampshire, hot between midnight and 3am. But it doesn't really matter so much where you go, as long as you get them fresh.

                          1. Black cherry cake.

Raised ones are for lite weights. :-)

Where do you get black cherry cake donuts from ?

                              1. re: kevin

Buchanan, Michigan. Former home of Clark Equipment. Think forklifts.

What with the shift work, this small town supported 2 made in house donut shops.

                                  Whats the name of
The donut shops with the black cherry ones ?

I'll have to write it down for the next time I visit.

                                  1. re: kevin

They were on Oak and Red Bud, heading towards the factory. Both were closed when I went through last October.

                              2. Cake

Unless it is a yeast right out of the fryer or Stan's peanut butter filled ones. Then it is a tie.

                                1. Methinks that's GLAZED, not raised;
                                  never even heard of 'raised'
GLAZED is the best. I'm glazed in every way!

                                    You can glaze a cake.

                                    You can glaze a raised.

This does not mean that a raised is a cake.

                                  2. Raised...I don't even consider cake real donuts.

                                    1. raised donuts.

I love Stans either peanut butter Reese's or the banana glazed one.

I love the maple long johns at Pronto Donuts in Monterey Park.

And I really like the chocolate glazed and maple long johns at Seaside Donuts near the Newport Beach Pier. They also made the best Cronuts that I have ever had which were also the cheapest, natch.

I am also a big fan of Stan's and love the peanut butter ones but I also like the bars and twists including Glazed Buttermilk Bar | Raisin Buttermilk Bar | Blueberry Buttermilk Bar | Assorted Buttermilk Bars | Chocolate Bar | Maple Bar | Glazed Twist | Chocolate Twist | Coconut Twist | Sugar Twist

Or how about the chocolate pretzels ?????

                                          2. re: wienermobile

                                            I like those too.

And for some reason, I like the fact that Stan is still making the donuts.

It's time to make the donuts. :)

                                        2. I used to prefer raised until I tried the butter & salt cake donut from Sidecar in Costa Mesa. It converted me upon first bite.

Part of what sold me is that the cake at Sidecar is not too heavy and dense.

The huckleberry cake donut at Sidecar was pretty damn good and I usually hate the cake donuts. But they are pricey at about 3 bucks a piece.

even the maple long john there was really great.

                                            1. re: kevin

I wanted to try the huckleberry. Will have to get it if they have it next time I go. Yeah, price is def on the higher side. Seems to be typical of the food truck turned brick and mortar scene.

                                          2. Raised all the way. If I wanted a dense, heavy doughnut I'd rather get a cupcake.

                                            1. Anyone else really despise donuts?

I mean, out of all the pastries, there are only a few grosser than donuts.

                                              1. RAISED. Tiger tail at DONUT MAN. Why am I shouting?
