96121 Tue Mar 21 16:04:55 -0800 2006 3 6 Southwest 0 524967 Just returned from NM and wanted to thank those who've posted on places in Abq, Santa Fe, and Taos. In Abq, dinner at Los Cuos (sp?)was great; very typical NM food and cheap! The Frontier was fun, and a much better breakfast than some place we tried without a chowhound recco called the Village Pancake. Dinner at Gruet Steakhouse was wonderful...pricey though. We shared an appetizer (the garlic shrimp, yummy), a ceaser salad, and the rib-eye, and sprung for the lobster mashed potatoes. We also shared a side of asparagus and a dessert (carmel walnut tart, also yummy). Even sharing everything, there was way too much food to eat... In Santa Fe, we had lunch at the Bobcat Bite. Green chile cheeseburgers are huge and possibly the best hamburger I've ever had! Dinner was at Geronimos, and although it was excellent, the wine list is very Cali-centric and over-priced, IMO, at 400-500% over retail. The complimentary breakfast at the Inn on the Alameda, where we stayed, was truly outstanding. Quiche, ham, chocolate croissants, and much more. In Taos we ate at Joseph's Table which to our palates was the equal or perhaps even a tad better than Geronimo. Next time we'll spend longer in Taos and check out some other places. On the way back to Abq, from Taos, we stopped for lunch as a place in Espanola called Joanne's...the best sopapilla's I've ever had, and excellent chile rellanos. I don't remember reading about this place, but it was some of the best NM food I've ever had! Thanks again, folks. This is not just a Geronimo problem. Having said that, however, I do not think the markup is as much as you say. Too high certainly, but not that high. Indeed wine pricing most everywhere in Santa Fe is not good but Geronimo is beyond outrageous. It is definitely 4 to 5x retail unless your retail is CostPlus or Costco in Albuquerque. It is so offensive that I simply avoid Geronimo and I'll readily acknowledge their food to be the best food in town. I've posted this before... a friend in Los Alamos who is well known on wine discussion forums describes the wine pricing at Geronimo to a "back-alley-mugging". He won't go there either because of it; politely declines offers of "comped" meals from them as well. Tue Mar 21 17:50:33 -0800 2006 524968 0 Bob S II 3 525014 We ended up buying a bottle of El Felipe malbec, from Mendoza Argentina, a wine we know well as my husband adores Argentinian malbec. It was $48 on the wine menu, and it sells for $10 - $12 here in OH. In fact, the bartender even told us his cost was $10 a bottle. So I don't think I exagerated the prices...
