New York's Big Gay Ice Cream is opening shop in downtown Los Angeles this spring.

wienermobile Jan 22, 2014 04:56 PM

Just signed a lease near the new Ace Hotel! With flavors like The Affogayto Mexicano (vanilla soft serve topped with whipped cream and hot chocolate made of Scharffen Berger cocoa powder and cayenne pepper), the Gobbler (vanilla soft serve topped with crushed graham crackers, pumpkin butter, and whipped cream), but the Salty Pimp is to die for (custard infused with salty dulce de leche).

Cococone=vanilla ice cream dipped in toasted curry coconut. Sounds great.

I don't really find their ice cream /soft serve all that appetizing.

In a weird way, I actually like their toppings significantly more than what their toppings are made for.

I could eat spoonfuls of the wasabi pea dust, as is. And have.

When their truck made a visit to LA about a year ago, I went out of my way to check it out. The ice cream was expensive and completely unexceptional. I felt that they were using an inordinate amount of style and humor to distract me from fully realizing it.

They're the Converse All Stars of ice cream. All style and little substance.

I wish we had Mr. Softee trucks here in LA.

Yes, I know, it's basically artificial gunk squeezed out of a Smart & Final machine, but it's just fucking ghetto-licious.

Mr. Softee is the only other soft serve that I would put in the same bracket as Carvel. I know people here have a nostalgic soft spot for Foster's, but if you taste it next to a Carvel vanilla, the difference in quality is not at all subtle.

Geez, within a block of my office, all these new places opening. Ice cream right across the street from Umami and their donuts (although they may have taken the donuts off the menu recently).

On the subject of the neighborhood, I ate at the new Ace Hotel's restaurant, called LA Chapter, and boy do they have a lot of kinks to iron out. Food was good albeit arrived cold, service extremely slow. Very limited menu (I had the steak)
