Black Camel special - Super Bowl wings

p
peppermint pate Jan 22, 2014 10:19 AM

I was at Black Camel the other day and saw a sign promoting a special for Super Bowl Sunday - wings! They're apparently roasted, then glazed for the last couple of minutes with bbq sauce, which gets nice and caramelized - yum. They're .60 a pop, which seems quite reasonable. I'm not sure if they've done this for past Super Bowls (anyone know?). They don't veer off-menu very often but I've never been disappointed with any of their offerings. I think you need to pre-order.

Very good to know, thanks peppermint pate!

      I'm in :)

Do you have pre order them?
A few dozen wings and some sammies would make for a great Super Bowl party!

Sounds perfect - but don't forget their chili either, made with ends from their brisket. Really good.

I think you need to pre-order but I'll double check.

I had no idea they made chili! This just keeps getting better and better :D

Oops.. I just read your original post again and noticed you did mention pre ordering D'oh!

Okay, so here's the scoop - they're requesting that people pre-order (preferably by end of day today) as they need to make sure they have enough wings on hand plus do some prep. They are planning to make some extras to sell the day of but if you don't want to risk it, just give 'em a call. Looking forward to Sunday!!

Not sure where I'll be on Sunday(Scarbs or Y&E) so it'll be either wings & brisket sandwiches from B.C or takeout from L's Chinese.

Thanks for posting this peppermint. I live close by but I have never bought anything at the Black Camel but just ordered a few dozen wings for Sunday.

Their sandwiches look delicious so I will certainly be back for one. I had a cappucino while there. It was good, but is nowhere near as good as the ones at Crema Coffee.

Black Camel makes some of the best sandwiches in the city!! You definitely have to go back for a sandwich Flexitarian!!

+1 - with chipotle mayo (not bbq sauce). And sometimes half and half of both onions - think kwass taught me that trick!

Flexitarian, can't believe you've never tried one. This is perfect brisket weather we're having. Run, don't walk. Enjoy.

Peppermint Pate: I always thought it was mainly a coffee place not a sandwich place, etc, until I read your post the other day. It seems to have a fantastic reputation. I may just be by tomorrow as my once in a while meat craving has been kicking in. I've been walking, cycling, running and driving by that place for years even before it was the Black Camel.

Ok, that's it. I am getting that brisket sandwich with mushrooms and both onions and chipolte mayo (not bbq sauce) tomorrow. I won't be able to sleep now!

Haha - now you're talking! Funny that you thought it was a coffee place. They happen to make fantastic americanos, which most people think is suprising since they think it's just a sandwich place.

Once you've mastered the brisket combo, we'll move on to some other ones. One step at a time, little grasshopper.

Oh, and now that we've talked about it so much, I just may need to get a brisket sandwich tomorrow as well! Please post to let us know how you like it.

Well I went today and yes that Brisket Sandwich is something else. And I love the Portuguese bun they use. But, I should have had the guy cut it in half. It was a bit messy to eat.

                            I will be back!

Black Camel is much revered for their brisket, which I agree is great.

My favourite sandwich there however is the pulled pork.

Fire roasted red onions. Chipotle mayo. House BBQ sauce.

                            Oh dear.

Most people park out front and keep an eye on their car to avoid the active ticketers in the area. On the other side of Yonge, there's a laneway that has legal parking after 10am. After 11, there is lots of street parking a block and further north, on either side of Yonge.

I always park on Roxborough, about a 4 minute walk away (on the west side of Yonge). Lots of free parking there. Easy.

My favourite is the pulled chicken with both onions, BBQ sauce (I usually ask for extra), cremini mushrooms, and fire roasted tomatoes. Sometimes I add (my own) yellow mustard to it as well, to offset the sweetness of the BBQ sauce! It really is one of the better sandwiches around!

As for parking, I usually park illegally right in front of BC, but like PP said, there is parking on the other side of Yonge. Never thought to park on Roxbourough, but that's a good idea.

Yeah there's lots of sidestreet parking in that area. I never even thought to park in front of BC. I just like to sit, relax and not have to worry about a traffic cop.

                                    But it's all good.

How do I know if my bowl is super?
As long as it holds the wings.

yummy. They were very good and a nice size. I detected a slight bit of honey in the glaze. I do like my wings with a bit of heat though but thats just personal preference easily remedied by adding a bit of hot sauce before eating. I would order again.

I ordered 30 wings for the two of us but we couldn't eat them all. I chopped up some celery and carrots and made my own blue cheese dip using half cup sour cream, half cup blue cheese, quarter cup mayo, juice from a half lemon, a chopped clove of garlic and salt-and-pepper.

I just had the rest of them heated today for lunch. The flavours were even a bit more nuanced. There were some nice spices in the coating but I couldn't quite figure out what.

I waited about 15 minutes for them - which left me a bit grumpy, but they were delicious... If i was a little smarter, or had a bit more energy that day, i would have made a dipping sauce like Flexitarian - because I think they needed it.

Also realized you need fries with wings - should have put some in the oven, or even better got the best in Toronto across the street at the Rebel House...

Thanks to Peppermint Pate for putting this thread up - I hadn't been at the BC for awhile and would have missed this... $.60 per wing was a bargain given how much love they put into them.

I had to wait 20 min for mine but didn't mind. They seemed to be working very hard to get the orders ready on time (upstairs above the store) and mine were piping hot when I got them.

Thanks Peppermint Pate too for informing us of this. And I thought the price was very reasonable.

Haha - of course I had some, just didn't have a second to post about them yet! I thought they were really good. I actually managed to try them 2 different ways, the regular way with bbq sauce and then some of my friend's order, which had no sauce, just the dry spice rub. We had a blue cheese dip (from a jar - your homemade one sounds delish flexitarian) and a little hot sauce/butter combo that we dipped both versions into. I'm generally not a fan of any bbq sauce and while I liked the regular version, I -actually all of us - preferred the one that just had the dry spice rub (same as what they put on their brisket). It was kind of smoky, had some heat and the wings were a bit crisper. Overall, a great one-off special. So glad you guys enjoyed them!

Do you know if they do those wings more often than just around Super Bowl? I would definitely order them again. Maybe if they don't they'd sell me some of their spice rub and I could make them myself.

And yes the blue cheese dip was as good as any I have had and the recipe came from here:

Maybe they would make them more often if they get enough requests. It wouldn't hurt to ask.

They pretty much stick to their menu. Years ago, they had a "sandwich of the month" but now it's an occasional new sandwich. I can't think of another time when they've done a non-sandwich special. They also have a sister restaurant, Boar, north of Yonge and Davisville that has all different sandwiches and some sides.
