Los Angeles Dish of the Month (February 2014) - Nominations

Los Angeles Dish of the Month (February 2014) - Nominations

We all know the drill by now, but in case you do not. The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for the LA area and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible during the month reporting back with details and photos. It's great to talk about places you've been in the past, but the idea is to explore new places and make new discoveries.

The dish that gets chosen for the shortest month of the year might be something very specific (pistachio gelato) but might also be more of a dish category (oysters). It's up to everyone here, but it probably makes sense to choose something that locals are excited about trying and finding the best and most interesting versions!

Some ideas off the top of my head to start the new year off.

Oyakadon
Simit
Chinese Crullers (aka Yiou-Tiao or 油條)
Collard Greens
Salsa
Tempura

Anyway, this is the nomination thread for February 2014 …you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread, it will be one vote per user.

To nominate a dish, please (please!) post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. This thread will be open until 11:59 PM PT on January 25th.

Great idea another vote for TAKE OUT

          1. re: JAB

Not enough fried foods this month eh? ;-)

            PASTA

              1. I don't get takeout as a DOM. You can get almost any cuisine and dish takeout. Might as well vote for FOOD.

Exactly. He may not like it, but you can get it. You can even get shabu shabu takeout. They'll box the soup and ingredients separately for you to take out.

                    2. re: Porthos

Just like you can get any cuisine in a neighborhood...

                      http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/9187...

I think the point (at least for me) is for 'hounds to explore what the best of any cuisine is when you're on the run or don't have time to have a sit-down meal

                      1. re: OCSteve

That was to encourage exploration of an underreported major part of town with many unexplored gems. Now it's a good link for those asking for K-town recs.

I don't see takeout being on the same level but I do see how the argument can be made. We've already done soup, salad, and sandwiches. If you're confident hounds are going to go out and report on new and exciting take out cuisines and dishes, by all means vote for it. I would love to be wrong.

                        1. re: Porthos

I don't know if they will or not. The only way to be sure is to roll the dice...

BTW, I'm glad you didn't take my response as argumentative. It wasn't meant to be.

                      2. re: Porthos

not all takeout is created equal. As a take-out connoisseur, I would love to hear other good take out options.

ex) fried fish as takeout is usually fail, but sri siam does a good version - they fry up the fish and package it for you, then put the accouterments in a sep container to do "final assembly" at home.

                          1. re: Porthos

Now that's something I can report on everyday :)
                            EAT IN

                          2. re: ns1

"I would love to hear other good take out options."

Why not just start a thread on take out options if you just want to hear about it? No need to vote it DOM. Start the thread now. Heck, I'll do it for you complete with Internet photos:

                            http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/960795

                            1. re: Porthos

Why don't you apply that same logic to every DOM nom?

                              1. re: ns1

Exactly! Because you're actually supposed to try and report on DOM that month not just talk/hear about it.

Also, take out like drive through and eat in are dining options, not exactly a dish. K-town works because DOM originally started as NOM (neighborhood of the month).

Don't you think best takeout in LA works better as a general topic anyways? Join the thread. It's already taking off.

                                1. re: Porthos

oh it took off huh? Guess it would've made a decent DOM thread but looks like that's no longer necessary.

We should just rename this thread to "What does Porthos feel like eating this month" nominations thread.

                                  1. re: ns1

Don't be silly. I eat what I want every month regardless of DOM. I didn't want Pancakes, Waffles, and French Toast, or Fried foods, or Fried Fish or Tacos but I still contributed.

I don't understand why you're upset. You wanted Take out. There is now a thread on take out.

No one said take out is out. Vote for it.

Again, "take out" isn't really a dish and I think it goes against the point of DOM but I'm only 1 opinion.

                                    1. re: Porthos

I get ns1's reaction and agree with him. "Neighborhood" isn't really a dish either, but you backed that pretty robustly. Clearly you were okay with breaking away from "dish" last month, but not so much now. I just don't understand your thought process.

                                      1. re: OCSteve

"Neighborhood" isn't really a dish either, but you backed that pretty robustly.
                                        =======================
DOM actually started off as Neighborhood of the Month so there is precedence for that. I made a convincing case to go back to it for 1 month but didn't make a convincing case for it to alternate with DOM. Such is life.

I'm only 1 vote. Vote in "Take out" if you guys feel so strongly about it.

                                        1. re: Porthos

If it evolved from neighborhood to dish, why not let evolve more? We can go from neighborhood to dish, but we have to stop there because you think we should?

Yes yours is only one vote and we can continue to vote for it, but you're other thread makes continuing to vote here kind of pointless. Your vote and opinions are respected and carry a lot of weight. I know I respect your opinions.

I just don't think it was a cool move to short circuit the process on this thread because it didn't meet your definition. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

                                          1. re: OCSteve

Since that thread is just all talk and no actual in month experience, no, it wouldn't be pointless to vote it in if you feel so strongly about it and if you garner enough votes.

And how is having a thread about "Take Out" a lose for those that want "Take Out" as DOM? Because it's not labeled DOM? Chime in. Contribute. Now you don't have to wait 2 more weeks to discuss and add to the topic you wanted in the first place. What if it didn't win? This way you get a guaranteed Take Out thread.

Maybe the discussion generated in that thread will lead to more votes and mass contribution in the Take Out DOM thread if that comes to pass.

                                            1. re: Porthos

A (chess) fork! Fitting for a food forum.

                                              We'll played, Porthos.

                                          2. re: Porthos

I think what you guys might be arguing about is that "take out" may just encompass too too much.

Whereas if a neighborhood were chosen like say Echo Park, or Florence Gateway, that would at least cause some limitations to occur.

And I always thought this Day of the Month shit was all about working within some delineated limitation, and maybe (just maybe) "take out" would be too broad ????

                                            Does that make sense ?

Or am I full of fuckin' baloney on this one ?????

                                        2. re: Porthos

Sounds like another vote for REDMEAT to me?!

                                          1. re: Porthos

It's because you don't apply the logic to every dom nomination and instead single out take out. Based on your logic below, we should just start a thread on every DOM nomination. Whatever dude, I'm over it.

                                                              This a tough month.

                                                              Too many nominees.

                                                              Delis sounds great too.

                                                                1. re: kevin

                                                                  1. re: kevin

                                                                    Hence:

                                                                        1. re: WildSwede

did you like the ones at the now despondently defunct The Wiener Factory ????

                                                                            Take-Out

                                                                            Pasta
                                                                            Rice Dishes

                                                                            Some random thoughts:

                                                                            - Would tuna sashimi count as red meat? And what of char sui pork? Both of which are generally thought of as non-red meat (certainly not of the bovine crimson variety)

                                                                            - For the vote to count you *must* spell it out in all caps. A "plus one" or "+1" is null and void on arrival.

                                                                            Happy Friday.
