Surprisingly good/bad coffee

Blumie Jan 18, 2014 07:26 AM

Ordered a really good egg and cheese sandwich from All Star recently (I think it was the cheese special that day; they really ought to have an egg sandwich on their permanent menu) and had it with a cup of coffee. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the coffee was. Speculation: I'm guessing that the employees are the principal drinkers of the coffee -- it's not the kinda place where people generally order coffee -- so perhaps that's why it's so good!

We've discussed this before, I believe, but Friendly Toast has awful coffee. There's no excuse for a place who's primary raison d'etre is breakfast food to serve such terrible coffee.

I dont order coffee anymore except in designated coffee places.

Nothing could sour an experience faster than a moderate to pricey meal in a nice place and find that they were unable to execute a simple pot of coffee.

...and dont get me started on tea.

I,m with you, Hyde. Once brought in my own home brewed peet s in a travel mug to a breakfast place. We travel with our own coffee and pour over. Life is too short to drink bad coffee.

Henrietta's and The Buttery are two places that come to mind that serve a decent cup of coffee.

We went to the Friendly Toast a few weeks ago to meet some friends, and we all commented on how lousy the coffee was. It is pretty surprising given their whole breakfast schtick.

Finally got over there for a bite the other day. The NH restaurant should sue the MA one for defamation. Limp fries, sloppy plating....honestly cannot remember more other than thinking that it was not worth a return visit.

Seems like breakfast/donut places either have good breakfast or good coffee, but never both.

Terrible coffee: Verna's Donuts, Friendly Toast, Kane's Donuts, Heavenly Donuts...

I have to disagree abut Kanes. Im there every morning. I'm a huge snob when it comes to coffee. I have returned more cups than i have drank. An i will say that your other mentions do suck along with Dunks and their ilk

I have to admit I've only been to Kane's once -- about two hours ago! -- and as fantastic as the donuts were, my coffee was some of the most watery, tasteless dreck I've had anywhere. Below 7-11 quality. Maybe I was just unlucky. I'll go back and try it again!

I like Verna's coffee - it helps to cut through the sugar and fat.

The coffee at Darwin's, for all their hoop-de-doo about it, is really dreadful.

I've been so scarred by bad coffee that if I have to go out to breakfast, I'll have coffee at home to get my fix, then just have juice or water at the restaurant.

Allston Diner serves an excellent cup of joe.

Surprisingly good: McDonalds. Not kidding. It's what Dunkin Donuts was 30 years ago. I've actually gotten a large HOT one on my way to the local breakfast joint.

Gotta plus one this, I almost made this same post but my flame proof suit was at the cleaners, it's shockingly good coffee

And $1.38 for a 20 oz iced (if they're not running the $1 special). Can't beat it. Although you usually have to repeat or clarify any slightly special request.
