Greetings SW Hounds,

I'm travelling to Las Vegas in May on business and would like to gather some tips on restaurants. Last year I went to Lotus of Siam and enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm looking for similar spots in terms of price/quality.

Here's a wish list:

* Mexican
* Dim sum
* Vietnamese, in particular a vietnamese sandwich shop
* anything that's considered nontouristy and delicous
* Good regional Chinese...sichuan, shanghai, fujian

i've been to star canyon, and Napa but a suggestion for an interesting expense-account type place would be appreciated as well

Thanks in advance for your help

just fled las vegas and swore that i would never return unless i was paid upfront - in cash.

but i did find and eat two meals in two days at florida cafe, a little cuban joint in a howard johnson lobby, next to the in-house wedding chapel - don't let it deter you.

really wonderful tamals served with four nuggets of chiccarones, delicate masa with a hint of real corn kernels.

plus they surprise you with a cup of amazing chicken soup - golden, chicken-y with chunks of tender chicken, potatoes and carrots, and thin noodles, served with a lemon wedge that you squeeze into the soup.

the entrees are served with some of the best plaintains i've ever had at a restaurant, cooked so that they've caramelized perfectly, slightly crispy, and sweet.

the cuban sandwiches are good not great i must say - bread not buttery or grilled enough and slightly bland fillings. the croqueta sandwich a bit better but still ask for the bread extra crispy.

For Chinese, try Joyfull House 4601 Spring Mountain Road between Arville and Decatur. This has long been the choice of the Chinese Community in Las Vegas. For great steaks and Argentinian food try Rincon de Buenos Aires 5300 SPring Mountain Road between Decatur and Lindell. This is one of the best kept secrets in Las Vegas. Wild Sage Cafe 600 East Warm Springs Road at Amigo and Grape Street Cafe 7501 West Lake Mead Blvd (not Lake Mead Drive) at Buffalo are two excellent local places to eat with Grape Street a tad bit more casual with a better wine list. I prefer Viva Mercados 6182 West Flamingo at Jones over Lindo Michoacan.

DO NOT MISS Commander's Palace in the Aladdin Desert Passage Shops. I have been there 4 times now, and it is on of the best restaurants I have ever been to, bar none. And I have been to quite a few - New York, LA, London, etc. Give it a try, the food and service are divine.

I agree. Commander's Palace delivers . . . *including* the check when it comes---yikes!!! Probably could buy 200 all-you-can-eat buffets Downtown for the tab. I remember a crab cake 90% lump crab with fondness.

Mexican: Bonita Michocan (sp?) Decatur & Twain
Vietnamese: Pho Chein (W. Sahara & Valley View area)
Chinese: Diamond China (same as Pho Chein)
Expense account: Rosemary's (W. Sahara), Commander's Palace (Aladdin)
Also, I hear Florida Cafe is great from several locals (haven't made it there yet)
Middle-eastern: Cav de Roi (Las Vegas Blvd. near Oakey - attached to the Oasis Motel) - best best best food. You will be happy and sated when you leave.

I second the recommendation of Lindo Michoacan on Desert Inn - the food is great, the staff is accommodating, and Javier, the owner, closely oversees the operation.
Dim sum is good at Harbor Palace (inspite of the health dept), but I prefer Cathay House, which is also on Spring Mtn, in the same center as Rincon de Buenos Aires.
If no expense is to be spared, I like Rock Lobster, in the Mandalay Bay, or (I hear from friends) the Eiffel Tower restaurant in the Paris.
