LOS--Do I Dare Dissent? + Rosemary's, Mon Ami Gabi
We recently traveled to Las Vegas for vacation and thanks to Chowhound and Gourmet put Lotus of Siam on our list of places to try.
I must say that I was underwhelmed and am still trying to figure out why in light of the glowing reviews/discussion on the list.
Perhaps it was because there were only two of us and thus couldn't try the number of dishes larger parties
have enjoyed... Perhaps it was because we are only occasional eaters of Thai food? While the dishes we tried were very tasty (wings, sour sausage, giant prawns) after all the hype I somehow expected more.
Additionally, on the night we visited the nephew of the owner was in charge of the dining room and I was turned off by his car-salesman personality.
As for getting to LOS w/o a rental car, from the South
Strip expect a 15$ cab ride each way.
I was nicely surprised by Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris hotel. We wanted to eat on the Strip once and this place was a good choice--a French bistro/steakhouse which, unbeknownst to me at the time I made the reservation, overlooks the fountains at the Bellagio and has an outdoor airconditioned terrace. We enjoyed well made composed salads, steaks and fairly authentic French bread. This is a good place to try if you want the Las Vegas experience without spending a huge amount of money. The steaks were tender and correctly cooked and wines were decently priced. Looking at different reviews of the big name restaurants on the strip it seemed to me that for every review for Picasso, Renoir, Aureole etc there was an equal number of reviews expressing disappointment with quality so we played it safe in terms of the strip.
Our best experience was at Rosemary's. The food and service were both fabulous. We had the Maytag blue cheese wedge (heavenly) corn shrimp chowder, tuna steak and haddock. The food was beautiful, delicious and the service was of a caliber I have not seen in quite a while. Highly recommended.
