Slide down the road to the Gristmill in Gruene. If it's not still too hot (ha!), request a table with a view of the river. Whatever you get, make sure to ask for the verde sauce on the side~makes everything yummy. I am also a big fan of their Gruene beans and my son loves the onion rings. Someone help me out here...we ate at an older privately owned hotel right off the interstate that had a great inexpensive breakfast. Sitting outdoors in their courtyard was pleasant(at least more pleasant than I expected)and I remember they had fabulous fresh salsa, which happens to be a BIG plus in my eyes.
I have had pretty good mexican food at Mammacita's on I-35
but really haven't tried some of the other places in town. You might check out the website to San Antonio Current, they may have some info for you.'
Oh the Clear Springs Restraunt in Clear Springs, just a few miles down the road from New Braunfels on TX Hwy 46 has good fried catfish and shrimp, tasty hamburgers and other things. It's in an old dance hallwith lots of old stuff over the walls, they use foam plates and plastic silverware, though I imagine for steaks they use real plates and silverware.
