I like what the offer at the Whole Foods headqaurters (6th @ Lamar). They make up several varities every day, usually pulling the ingredients straight from their produce section.

The downside is that it isn't cheap.

Avi, are you writing a book about the gelati of Texas or something? Let me know when you'll be in Austin and I'll buy you a gelato at Whole Foods (you won't need your French knife for it).

I have tried a lot in Austin as well as New York, Miami, Dallas, Florence Italy, and Houston. If you are in Texas you must go to Teo in Austin. They are rated as a top 10 gelato shop in the United States by Yahoo, Forbes and Msnbc. I think it all started 6 years ago and opened up as Babbos (until Mario Batali made them change their name)..anyway the gelato is authentic and yummy. They have Italian espresso and good ole joe! Opens at 7am and closes at 11pm...I found this all out while we were staying at the hospital across the street.....i asked what they use and they do not put corn syrup or other additives in their product. What a fun place!!

Dolce Vita is good and heavy, but with smooth texture and excellent flavors that taste very natural to me. I can't say that about any other gelato place in town.

I concur on the Dolce Vita gelato. Order the coconut- it is the smoothest, creamiest flavor. I think it's non dairy too. Dump a shot of espresso on top too.
