Please visit the Roaring Fork at the Stephen F. Austin Intercontinetal. They serve a wonderful meal in the dining room as well as a cool bar menu. It's on Congress just a few blocks from the Capitol. The food and service are really superior. At the hotel, there is a great patio deck upstairs that is not to be missed. This is great Austin people watching. Obviously, I really love this place! If you happen to stop at the bar, they serve a gratis beef jerkey that is to die for!!! ... not to mention the items on the menu!

Also III Forks downtown is great Steak Place, but expensive, even more expensive than Roaring Fork (also good) listed above.

There's so many great places! The topics links that knoblauch posted will help. My personal faves? BBQ - Salt Lick but not the one on 360. Steak - the black & blue ribeye from Austin Land & Cattle. La Reyna, Maria's Taco X-press or Juan in a Million for a Tex Mex breakfast. I'd go to Shady Grove, too. Chuy's is always fun for out of town guests. I like Moonshine's Sunday brunch, too.

If you are looking for pub grub, you should try Casino El Camino's hamburgers or go to Doc's or Freddie's Place. A few Austin flavor bars you shouldn't miss out on but that don't have great food are Ginny's Little Longhorn (Sundays, for chicken poo bingo), Cedar Door and Mean Eyed Cat.

I would definitely throw my vote in for Cedar Door as a bar spot. They are the ONLY spot I know of in town that don't have a cut off on the number of mexi martinis they will serve you (I went last weekend as a part of my birthday celebration and had 4...no questions asked). Plus, the drinks are actually quite strong, something that annoys me about the limits at say Chuys or especially Trudy's....you can only have two but good luck finding the tequila!

Make sure you go to Austin Land and Cattle, if you pick this one, at 12th and Lamar and NOT Texas Land and Cattle. Huge difference in quality. I had a business dinner ( I was not the one choosing) once at Texas L&C and it was the worst steak I've ever had in my life. The other people with me were in agreement. I've eaten at Austin L&C many time and it has always been excellent. They have a good wine list and the bar makes great drinks. Also, I agree about the Mean Eyed Cat, try and go there too
