DFW -- Ralph and Kacoos in Allen

Louisiana mini-chain Ralph and Kacoos has opened a branch in Allen, just south of the McDermott exit off 75.

We stopped by tonight and had a very good meal: oysters Rockefeller, shrimp cocktail, "crab trap" and redfish atchafalaya. It an't cheap, but the food is good and the service is friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

  1. so really, you likey? i thought there wuz one in D a few years ago that was not so good. but maybe it's not the same place (tho with a name like that ...)

      Well you have to admire the R&K guys. They did leave town many years ago after putting up a valiant fight.
      A bad (hidden)location on NW Hwy across from The Men's Club, a horrible economy and average to variable food did them in. Nice to see that they are back in town.

        Maybe I was just jonesing for some good Louisiana-style seafood, but, yeah, I liked it. Compared to Nate's on Belt Line, this place is a.) a lot less manic, b.) a lot less ... uh ... rustic, and c.) smoke free. Plus, they had Stella on tap, and what looked like a decent and reasonable wine list.

        It's not on a par with one of Nola's best places. But it's a whole lot better than Big Easy, or the other pseudo-coonass places in the area. I'll admit that I haven't tried the couple of new places that have opened in Deep Ellum, though.

          I always liked the R&K in Shreveport, but that was before
          I had ever eaten in N'awlins.

          That being said, they still do a serviceable job with Cajun/Creole, especially for the Metroplex.

          the old one was across from the mens club off n-west hwy probably 10 years ago.

        3. I had one of my worst dining experiences at R&K on 5/13/06. Four of us had sat in the bar area to eat at a table. It took an hour and 15 minutes after we ordered to have our food at the table. We had ordered the Sensational Salad, 2 of the Mahi Mahi and Shrimp Scampi pasta. The food was okay, my salad was drenched in dressing. The shrimp in the scampi came with tail on, so my husband had to dig in with his hands to pull the tails off. I will say that the bread was wonderful though!!!
          Everytime our waitress came by, it was just to tell us that she would be right back and that it was her first night. (which became rather annoying). She then let us know that we would now be the center of attention since her other tables have left. hmmmm
          At the end of dinner our plates sat on the table for >10 minutes. We finally called the manager over- whom by the way seemed like he could care less about what we had to say. So the manager said he would find our waitress for us, because no one else knew where she had gone. She finally came out, apologized and that was that.
          I have heard the service is bad there but my father-in-law wanted to try it out- needless to say, none of us will be back.

            Sorry to hear you had such a lousy service experience. If that's how the manager reacted to your complaint, it's no surprise that the place has service problems.

            However, I have to say that I don't think I have ever had shrimp scampi that didn't have the tails on. In fact, most of the time, it comes split, with the shell on. Usually, I use a knife and fork to remove the shells and/or tails.

          2. The location in Allen has mgmt. issues. Made the mistake of paying cash for a gift card there and not only was it not honored, but the manager was rude and refused to deal with the problem. On that particular night one of the meals was WAY off. So not only did my "guests" not get to use the gift card, but they had to pay for a bad meal as well. The four people involved will never go back and they've gotten the last of my family's money as well. Looks like it's Nates or Shuck N Jive for us.

            1. i have been to R&K's a number of times and have always had a good experience. food is way better than most other seafood places north of the Bush and they have a great wine list.

              1. Ralph and Kacoos is by far the most "pseudo-coonass" restaurant I have ever been to. It is and has been a tourist trap in New Orleans for years. If you want good seafood go to S&D Oyster House. Ralph and Kacoos is for people who have no idea what New Orleans food is like.
