    Dos Caminos?

You can also check one of the tequila-mezcal focused places in the LES.

Barrio Chino. Pretty sure they'll take a reservation if you're a party of eight or more. (If they won't, don't bother, as you will never get a table. It's crowded. Because it's good.)

        Empellon Taqueria - W Vill
Hecho en Dumbo - E Vill
        Maya - UES
        Rocking Horse Cafe - Chelsea
        Hell's Kitchen - 9th ave

Only 'scenes' of these would be Hecho and Empellon.

La Esquina - NoLita - still feels like a scene even to us jaded New Yorkers. I still like it.

Depending on where you are coming from, Dos Caminos Meatpacking might feel like a scene to you. It is a scene but may not be one to your liking.

For the OP note it's the "downstairs" at la esquina for the cool kids crowd....

            +1 for Salvation Taco
For groups of 8 or more, they'll reserve a table for your group and put together a series of platters to share.

Totally forgot about that, but I agree it's great for a group. I was with 8+ people last time and we had a table near the bar upfront all to ourselves and had a great time. Good margaritas as well as other cocktails for the non-tequila inclined.

Barrio chino and hecho en dumbo have great margaritas and food- definately a "scene" as well.
The margaritas at dos caminos were too sweet and after several visits i'm still not a fan of their food either.

Fonda on Avenue B also will serve, particularly at the bar or the tables up front. All around we vote Fonda as our best Mexican option nowadays.
