The Alinea crying baby episode

Not sure how many of you have seen this, but a couple with pre-paid Alinea tickets had a baby sitter cancel at the last minute so they brought their child to Alinea. When the baby, who was apparently not a fan of molecular gastronomy, began crying the other diners complained.

Achatz basically tweeted 'what are you gonna do?' and did nothing ... and it blew up on social media.

Is the couple at fault for bringing a baby to a restaurant like this? (Yes, though I understand why they did it). Is Achatz partially at fault for the Draconian 'pay in full, no refunds' policy (Yes, I think so). Were the complaining customers at fault (I don't think so ...)

      1. One of the parents should have left the table with the baby to find a quiet place (out of the dining room) until the baby stopped crying.

Yes. and if baby doesn't stop, parents can alternate tasks. Doesn't make for an enjoyable meal for anyone.

        2. This is being discussed on the Food Media board.
