Can anyone recommend a great bakery for birthday cakes?

I have had special cakes made at three terrific bakeries in your area. Each of them made what I consider really excellent cakes both in taste and beauty. They are:

    Alice Bakery – North Wales
    Night Kitchen – Chestnut Hill
Roma – Fort Washington (particularly their cream cakes or tiramisu cake or rum cake).

I don’t think that you can go wrong with any of the three above noted bakeries.

      Ann's Cake Pan (Horsham)

I like Night Kitchen a lot too.

The finest cake I ever had was a "Tahitian" wedding cake in 1996 from Aux Petites Delices in Wayne.

If, in childhood, you ever laid in the grass on a summer day and looked at the clouds wondering what clouds tasted like,.....get a "Tahitian." You will concur.

        Have you considered Zakes Cafe?

While I always enjoy the food at Zakes, I have always found the cakes to be disappointing. They look great, but the taste never lives up to the presentation.

Interestingly, I have always loved the cakes at Zakes. They are not overly sweet and have, to my taste, excellent texture, good flavors not muted by sweet icing. Definitely not your run of the mill birthday cake.

The birthday party is in Bucks County but will drive to Philly or Burbs for a great cake!

I have had Alice Bakery in North Wales make a number of birthday cakes. Check out their FB page for great photos of the cakes they make. I personally don't eat cake, but everyone raves about the quality and great taste.
