The Taste 1/9/14

Thought I'd make a thread for the second episode of the second U.S. season.
Nigella's team loses the first competition so Nigella has to eliminate one person from her team. Kind of awkward. It isn't just eliminating the person who's dish went up it is picking through all the dishes. Reina is eliminated from her team. Frankly, glad to see that loud annoying woman go. All of her talking heads were about how Nigella is crazy and threatened by her beauty.
Guest judge is Edward Lee. He goes to mentor the winning team which is Ludo's. The theme is "My Life on a Plate." He cooks a fabulous looking dish for the team and the vegetarian woman refuses to taste his meat. The mind boggles. Edward Lee is just as personable and fabulous as would be expected. Sadly, not much time is devoted to him.
The show goes on to the individual challenge with Nigella down one chef. All the cooks get one hour to cook their dish. Tony, Nigella, Marcus and Ludo leave the room. The team that won the team challenge gets to keep Ed Lee in their kitchen.
While we wait to see who goes home we find two contestants are having a showmance. Previously we heard about the previously fat woman's blog with her 5 million fans... and now for the judging
Jay and Audrey are selected as the worst cooks. Jay, the former 400 pound guy that does wedding cakes gets sent home.
Nigella's team has just been whacked in half. If how they cooked in this show is any indication... the rest of her team won't be here much longer as well.
First that Sevan guy, now Reina and Jay. We certainly can't accuse the show of keeping the annoying ones around for the ratings this time.
Sure Jay was overly defensive at first but that in itself was a lame reason to send him home. Marcus all but said afterward, "If you can't suck up to us, we don't want you".
The backstage sets for the judges' area look like a trailer park production of Midsummer Night's Dream.
Nigella seems to have picked very poorly - again. Edward Lee was a great mentor. Patient when he needed to be; instructive when he could be.
Jay was a moron for arguing with the judges. Marcus was right - Audrey was appropriately ... deferential? ... to their suggestions and ideas and said she would work on it, whereas Jay was insistent he was right and four judges with far more cooking experience than he were wrong.
Audrey the Blog Lady is a PITA. Stop pushing the blog and just cook.
As for Reina. OMG. Really? Nigella was jealous of Reina's beauty? Ummm....no, I'm damn sure that's not the reason, Reina. But way to get a lot of camera time with your crazy act.
The two pretty boys seems well matched (Jeff and Lee). I'm also liking Shehu. No one else has stood out for me.
Which is the vegetarian lady? Cassandra, right? The ABC website for The Taste has jackshite except pictures and videos of and about the judges. Nothing about the contestants.
And yes, the last person picked, the older Korean (I think?) woman....ahh, her name is Marina. I had to attempt to read this recap (few paragraphs, so difficult to read) to figure out her name.
Yes! Cassandra. Audrey annoys me too so its easy to mix them up. I just think of Cassandra as annoying laugh vegetarian lady.
Marina just fascinates me with her backstory. I do feel like this season they are showing more of the food than they did last season.
Edward Lee can come mentor me at any time. Really. Any time at all.
That Reina woman who kept saying Nigella is threatened by her must be nuts. Didn't Nigella have the worst team in the last season? Sure looks like she's heading for an early exit this season.
I think the food truck lady on Anthony's team has smoked too much pot. She forgot to cook the rice for a rice dish?
The healthy biggest loser with her legion of fans just needs to shut up. The other biggest loser couldn't shut up and I'm glad he and his issues are gone.
Team hot mess is so apropos, from the mentor on down. Former fat guy ("FFG") who came out of the closet immediately tries to throw his only competition on that team under the bus, either that or his palate is truly terrible (because the two best dishes on that team was his or hers, according to Nigella). It's rather unbelievable that any team can have two hyper defensive knuckleheads (Reina even more than FFG). And then there's the meatloaf lady who doesn't know how to use an oven - okay!? I just can't believe anyone makes meatloaf for a competition. Luckily there's one pro on that team who will likely keep Nigella in the competition until half way through the season.
I had heard that this show was not good but I caught part of episode 1 of this season and thought I'd give it a try.
So, this is my first season of the Taste, and if I say something that has already been discussed to death last season, I apologize.
First, does Nigella usually lie on the couch like Cleopatra? It seems a bit inappropriate.
Is Tony the head judge? He seems to be in charge.
I'm so glad that Nigella got rid of the crazy lady. Jealous of her beauty? Does she not have a mirror? She looks like a man in drag. And I believe that Nigella is generally acknowledged to be a very beautiful woman, whatever you may think of her personal life.
They have to get rid of that blogger woman. Self-absorbed much?
And the veggie too. She doesn't even know to crisp the skin of the fish.
Generally, the ones who aren't professionals have terrible knife skills. Watching them chop onions made me cringe. And watching one of them scraping the chopping board with the cutting edge, as well as banging the knife against the pan made me sick. I'm not professionally trained but I know not to do these things.
Still, I can't seem to stop watching.
Not sure re: Nigella reclining on the couch. Bourdain is essentially the host, so yes, head judge. (He created the show with Nigella.) Similar to the way that Simon Cowell used to have the last say in American Idol.
The first few weeks weed out the not-so-good contestants.
I still dislike when they fill the tasting spoons so full.
