Traveling solo --reservations at barcelona tapas bars?
I'll be traveling solo in the next couple of weeks to Barcelona for the first time, and will only be there a couple of evenings. I thought I'd focus on tapas and less on formal restaurants. Perhaps a silly question (or the answer is "it depends"), but is it standard to make a reservation for a tapas bar? Or is it a situation where you can reserve a table, but bar seating is generally open? Thank you.
You can't reserve at a tapas bar. Bars in Spain are very informal. There is no set number of places at the bar and tables are grabbed when they are available. People just stand, drink, eat and chat. They come in when they want and leave when they're done. That's the whole point of Spanish bars.
You can, however, reserve at some tapas restaurants - Those things that have sprung up to accommodate tourists and some of the middle-class. Places like Paco Meralgo come to mind.
