More Rice, Please!

johnseberg Jan 10, 2014 08:16 AM

I am looking for a particular rice. I saw something that will probably be pretty good at Yusef's http://www.yusefsgrocery.com But, I am fairly ignorant of similar grocery stores in the Phoenix area. It looks like I'll need to buy at least 10 pounds, so, it would be nice to see more options.

I'm looking for grocery stores with a good selection of imported rice. I've also been to Lee Lee http://www.leeleesupermarket.com in Peoria and LF Market Oriental & Seafood in Glendale. I favor Yusef's, at this point.

I'm looking for the following attributes:
1) White.
2) parboiled (sela or sella).
3) High Amylose (possibly basmati or Bangladeshi?).
4) *NOT* enriched.

Thanks!

Baiz Market (20th St @ Fillmore-ish) might be worth checking out. They deal primarily in Middle Eastern goods, but they do have a good stock of ingredients specific to the cuisines of the Indian subcontinent.

While out running errands yesterday, I was reminded of Zam Zam World Foods--east side of 40th St, just north of McDowell. I don't recall how big their selection was on my last visit, but they might be worth checking out too.

One of the guys at India Delhi Palace recommended Zam Zam. I was running late for another appointment, so, I didn't check it out.

I did stop by Baiz on Saturday. Their selection was actually not quite as good as Yusef's, pretty comparable, though.

I'll probably get to Zam Zam before my current supply runs out.

        Thanks.

          Ah. OK.

Actually, Zam Zam is on the west side of 40th, not the east side. It's a little easier to spot if you're heading south on 40th, as their signage is more visible from the north and east sides of the building.
