    M. Wells Dinette - rabbit and foie terrine

Moti Mahal - scallops appetizer with mango and celery puree

I like the sound of that scallop dish and Ive never been to Moti Manal, so, i'm glad you posted.
Doesn't matter if it's only ten days in, this way we can all get ideas of where to go in the future. Thanks again.

    2. I'll amuse myself by adding 2 more dishes.
Fried Iwashi ( sardine) at Blue Ribbon Izakaya
Tempura uni and scallop together w/side shishito pepper also at Blue Ribbon Izakaya ( photos)

      1. I've dined out only twice this year (so far), but the following dishes were outstanding:

Atera: Matsutaki mushroom consommé with pine nut miso and foie gras; aged wagyu beef with shaved white truffle

        Heidelberg: potato latkes (not kidding).

Both dishes sound great. Ive never been to Atera, Also, I love potato latkes. I made some Trader Joe's latkes the other day and they were decent, but I'm sure Heidelberg's were much better. Thanks for New places for me to try.
Today : Viet Cafe's vegetarian crabcakes, really crispy and delicious.

          1. re: ellenost

            Adding to my list:

EMP: new hot pastrami with mustard on rye.

            1. re: ellenost

              The NoMad: chicken liver mousse.

              Betony: chicken liver mousse; lobster.

              Ma Peche: habanero fried chicken.

            2. re: ellenost

Agreed on the aged wagyu beef with truffles, we had it a few days ago and we adored. It was my second time there and definitely want to go again. Here is a picture of the dish, but I also have a video on instagram @foodemotion

              1. re: Ffromsaopaulo

Thanks for posting the photo; I had forgotten to take a photo until 1/4 way through the dish. Atera has become one of my favorite restaurants.

                1. re: ellenost

I loved going there again! A winner.

            3. The Dutch - fried chicken with honey butter biscuits

Dominique Ansel - apple tarte tatin

              1. The foie dish at the NoMad was very good, different from every other foie gras terrine being served around town.

It's marinated in cognac, and then apple wood smoked. It was incredible, almost cheese-like.

That sounds like an interesting version of foie terrine. I recommend you try it at Paradou, they have 5 or 6 versions there.

                2. Here are my favorite dishes of 2014:

                  Carrots at Piora

P.S. Love the fried chicken at the Dutch. Is it still available for lunch only

I had the fried chicken at The Dutch during Sunday brunch. I don't think it's available for dinner.

                      +1 for Piora's carrots- YummO!!

                    2. The year is still young, but so far:

Henry's End has been serving that dish since they opened many years ago. I've had the Elk Chops probably 15 years ago, and they were really good.

                        2. Breads Bakery's chocolate babka ((when fresh from the oven.. amazing))
Uncle Boons.. many dishes from here are amazing..

                            Lincoln - lughetti con sanguinaccio

                            1. re: Riverman500

I've never been to the Lincoln. I haven't been to Boulud Sud either been to DBGB, not sure if that is similar.
What is lughetti con sanguinaccio? I like the name, so I want to try it.

My latest top dish was at-
Telepan Local : Nantucket Bay Scallops black trumpet puree & garlic

                              1. re: foodwhisperer

The lughetti is hand cut spaghetti with blood sausage and a bit of grape and parmigiano in the sauce. Very unusual but I thought it was delicious. Lincoln is one of my favorite restaurants in part because the chef introduces new dishes on a regular basis.

Boulud Sud has a Mediterranean emphasis so it's not really comparable to DBGB. Higher price point too.

                                1. re: Riverman500

Boulud Sud isn't quite as loud/energetic, the food feels more precious with elegant plating- more emphasis on wines than beers. And pricier. Great when its nice enough to sit outside

I almost tried that dish last night . I guess next time I will.
I did try the lobster roll ( cold not hot) just to compare to other places. I would say for the purists, you get a good portion of lobster meat. But the problem I had was it was lacking flavor. Although I do not like Pearl Oyster bar's lobster rolls because they are too runny with the "mayo or liquid" they have plenty of flavor. Cull and Pistol's were tasteless. Also, I didn't like that the pieces of lobster in the lobster roll were very big. Others might enjoy that , for me it was too much chewing.
The service was excellent, the oysters were excellent. So were the little necks.

                                                                    1. re: Ziggy41

Except for a pastrami sandwich at Katz's - which was as great as ever and kept me up all night because of indigestion from all that fat but was worth it - I think the best things I've had this past month or two were all desserts. Several of them have been from Il Laboratorio del Gelato. Favorite gelato flavors I've had there recently (actually, last several months): allspice, butternut squash, toasted coconut, crème fraiche, Mexican cinnamon (not sure that's the exact name - it's a concentrated cinnamon flavor with a touch of chili), rosemary (and if I have to pick a single standby favorite, I think it would be the rosemary). Favorite sorbets: blood orange, passion fruit.

I also had a Restaurant Week lunch at Esca, and by far the best course was the dessert, which as I recall was a sour red plum crostata in a brown butter with creme fraiche, with the inspired wine pairing of a moscato which was sweet but with an edge.

                                                                                                                                            1. would there be interest to contribute to a similar list for queens and booklyn?

The tripe at Momofuku Noodle Bar. It may qualify as best dish 2004/2014 since it's from their 10 year throwback menu. But miraculously it seems to have stayed on the menu. Rich, delicious, like the best menudo I've ever tasted. Now if only I had thought to bring some tortillas...

The first night of "Momofuku10" was a real celebration, it made us remember that they started as a neighborhood place trying something new, and managed to turn out some great food as they figured it all out!

I am a good cook but most of the time it would be cooking for myself and it always costs me as much as eating out. Buying ingredients when your cabinet is not stocked, gets expensive. It's easier to go out. That being said I'm cooking tomorrow.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                1. re: MarieLuncheonette

On weekends I can do a PB&J. I tried making pasta once but it was terrible :)

I haven't been in a while, and, while I never thought it was bad, it wasn't the sort of place that would have a dish on "Best dishes". Or is the pork chop just really good?

I did enjoy the pork chop Milanese which, unusually, had a bit of Parm and garlic in the breading. The sweet corn salad was a nice counterpoint. I think the Best Dishes thread should include low key restaurants as well as highly publicized ones.

It was more like a large cut of head cheese, paired with a nice sauce.

I find that humorous, I actually have eaten head cheese , it's not looking that appetizing. But I'm sure it was really good foie gras, sounds like torchon foie gras

I'm glad you find it amusing :-) And yes, I agree with you, normally head cheese doesn't always look appetizing but it's delicious in my opinion. Anyway, that was the only term that came to mind before. But yes, the foie was like torchon style.

I was planning to order more, and possibly come back the next day, but the pie was so surprisingly bad that I ditched those plans. The crust tasted like crap, pancetta overwhelming, black pepper was MIA, and the pie came with Ikea instructions on how to eat it.
