What is your choice of drink in the morning?

Curious to see what people drink in the morning. I was raised a tea drinker, then drank coffee for a short period 15 years ago and switched back to tea shortly after. 1 1/2 years ago I switched to hot lemon water as I CANNOT enjoy tea without less than 2 tsps. of sugar per cup. This goes for coffee as well. Funny enough I have a salty tooth over sweet for everything else.
The odd time, I'll have a glass of Auther's veg/fruit smoothies, although as soon as I get to work I make my hot lemon water.
I would love an alternative once in awhile and curious to see what others enjoy or don't enjoy.

  1. Coffee.

    Sometimes a V8.

    1. Black coffee, OJ, and on occasion, grapefruit juice.

      1. Espresso. Must have. No talking before espresso.

          Same here!

        2. Decaf cappuccino…
Side of OJ I pick from my trees.
          Absolutely necessary.

I live in Ontario, Canada and fresh OJ from a tree sounds amazing!

            1. re: fryerlover

Fresh squeezed oh is my favorite food/drink ever.

          2. Green tea with sweetened condensed milk.

I think I need to try this combination. Usually just a bit of honey when I go want green tea. But this sounds way better!

            2. 8 O'Clock coffee with lots of half and half.

              1. Mountain Dew.

I use to do the Dew (or the Walmart version) while on school. Loved the stuff.

                  1. re: wadejay26

That has been my answer for over ten years, with a few gaps when I kicked it for a while. I just got off it again....

Code Red was my "brain fuel" in high school. One of my friends would always say "gotta top off that tank!" when he saw me at the vending machine.

                  2. Home roasted, freshly ground, high octane coffee every morning.

Just googled this as I've never heard of it. Very interesting! I'll try this if I see it.

Fyi some mates have a LOT of caffeine, just be aware and read carefully if you're sensitive to it

                          1. re: Ttrockwood

Oh, okay. Thanks for the info.

                      2. Pour-over (Chemex) coffee, either La Llave (cheap) or Peet's French Roast (not cheap) or one of the NOLA chicory-laced ones, Cafe du Monde or French Market (prefer the latter). Two cups, with a half-teaspoon of sugar in each. I'm not doing juice anymore; if I want fruit I'll eat some.

Once in a while I'll break a banana up into the blender, add a glass of milk and a heaping soup-spoon of European-formula Ovaltine (available here at Asian markets), and have that shake for breakfast. That's fun too.

                        1. I developed some negative reactions to caffeine a few years ago so I had to cut out green tea, which I used to drink in large quantities. Sadly, the occasional toddy or coffee is also no more. These days, it's fresh squeezed OJ a couple days a week. V8 maybe once a week. Fresh tangerine mimosas or screwdrivers on weekends.

                          1. Absolute first thing i have an espresso. Then i go to the gym and have a big mug of dark roast coffee with a splash of soymilk afterwards.
I make fresh juice each morning that i drink either as breakfast or an afternoon pickmeup. Most recent combo has been kale/cucumber/lemon/ginger and a small green apple- or a cucumber/spinach/pineapple/cilantro and lemon. I've been having a fresh veg based juice daily for almost a year and have noticed a huge improvement in energy and my skin looks glowy (!)

                            1. Currently a small glass of kefir and a can of Coke.

I guess the Coke is the "chaser", no?

It's the " if I don't have caffeine within minutes of waking I'm going to have a massive headache and I need some easy to drink to take my medicine with".

                              2. Coffee and water

                                1. Diet Coke.

                                  1. 1. A large glass of water as I wake up and listen to the news.

                                    2. A 16 oz mug of tea made with 2 Red Rose tea bag; add 2% milk

                                    3. more tea at work.

Juice...very rarely, except for store brand version of V-8.

A large handle of rotgut as I wake up and listen to the news.

                                    2. Coffee (La Llave done in a Bialetti) con latte.

                                      1. glass of water, two cups of coffee, black/long black; in random order

                                        1. I usually have a glass of half OJ/half water. Or diet cranberry juice.
DHs French Pressed coffee males me jittery, so sometimes l'll have a cup of hot decaf tea.

                                          1. Start with ice-cold water at home and then tea at work.

                                            1. Mexican cane sugar sweetened Coke and a ciuple of glasses of water

                                              1. Green tea with a wedge of lemon every a.m.

I used to drink coffee, but couldn't tolerate it without loading up with the flavored non-dairy creamer. Found out the non-dairy is full of stuff that's not good for me.

I was a tea drinker anyway, so just ditched the coffee and went for tea full-time.

                                                1. As a child I would drink avocado milk or tea in the mornings, but nowadays I get a horrible stomach ache if I drink tea on an empty stomach. If I'm having a large breakfast, I'll treat myself to a cup of tea, but otherwise it's coffee or the occasional bloody mary or mimosa.

I've never heard of avocado milk. I'd love to try this. I'll keep an eye out for it.
                                                    Mimosa.........yum!

                                                    1. re: fryerlover

Just blend avocados, milk and sugar and you're set! This was a variation on another typical breakfast of diced avocado in sweetened milk that I loved growing up.

                                                  2. Water and coffee, usually Peet's, with a small amount of heavy whipping cream.

                                                    1. I avoid caffeine, so I usually go with a hot decaf Milchkaffee (I make 10oz of very strong coffee in my Bialetti and add about 3-4 oz of milk, or half and half if I'm feeling decadent) in the cold months, iced in the warm months. I don't NEED a beverage to get going in the morning, though, so if I don't have time or I'm not feeling the coffee that day, I just stick with water (seltzer preferably).

                                                      1. Drip coffee, Earl Grey or Chai at home in the fall, winter and spring. Frappe (Greek style iced coffee made with Greek Nescafe) at home in the summer.
Cappuccino or drip/French press coffee if I'm not at home.

I love a good cappuccino, although for some odd reason, I view it as a once in awhile treat. Weird, I know. I think it's because I need sugar with it.
I only tried cappuccino in Cuba 7 years ago for the first time and I've not found one elsewhere that matches in taste. Maybe it was the sun, being fed by others and the no housework that week that made it taste sooooooooo yummy.

                                                          1. re: fryerlover

I order a cappuccino a couple times a week. When I first started drinking coffee 15 years ago, I was drinking mocha lattes/caffe mochas. Within a year, I had switched over to mostly unsweetened cappuccinos, then over to drip coffee (with milk). I don't add any sugar to my coffee or cappuccino, and now find the mochas/caramel/pumpkin spice lattes too sweet. I try to justify the higher cost of my frequent $3-$4 cappuccino by very rarely buying baked or fried treats to accompany it, and ordering 8 ounce/small/ short cappuccinos. I've bought 4 cappuccinos, 2 drip coffees and one dulce de leche square in the first 10 days of 2014.

                                                            1. re: prima

I've tried so very hard to have coffee, tea and the like without sugar, however I just don't enjoy them.
When I was young (now in my 30's) I would not take milk so my mother would give me tea in a bottle with lots of milk and wayyyyy too much sugar for any child. When I started drinking tea in a cup I remember putting about 6 sugars in one cup and over the years I have weaned myself down to two sugars. I have not been able to go lower in the last 15 years without not liking the taste.
I'll keep trying though and maybe by the time I'm retired, I can enjoy those drink without sugar. ;)

                                                              1. re: fryerlover

If I add milk, I like coffee without sugar. If there's no milk available, I usually end up adding sugar to my coffee. I also don't enjoy black coffee.

                                                        2. Green Juice, Kale / Apple / Celery /Lemon and Ginger

                                                          1. 6:00am: warm water with the juice of one lemon to start
6:30am: smoothie with either almond milk or fresh squeezed orange juice with 1 cup of blueberries or blackberries
7:00am-11:00am (over a 4 hour period) 2 cups of coffee with almond milk

                                                            1. Oj or grapefruit juice mixed half and half with water.

A Mexican coke out of a glass bottle as a treat on the weekend.

Once in a while, a cup of coffee if I have the time to relax on the porch.

                                                              1. Sometimes matcha.

Othertimes I buy the high dollar coffee and brew it in the aeropress. Currently that means one of Intelligentsia's Ethiopian varieties.

I find it's nice to change the routine.

After one or two cups it's water or maybe a bit of coconut water.

                                                                1. Usually a kefir and frozen berry smoothie.

But if my sinuses or allergies are acting up half lemonade and half seltzer to clear the palate.

I still need my daily caffeine fix, but I've moved it back to an after lunch pick me up.

                                                                  1. Weekday I like espresso.Weekends espresso,and beer with breakfast.

                                                                    1. Usually speaking: Water.
However, sometime it is milk, especially when I have a bowl of cereal.
Now, I am slowly moving toward tea.

                                                                      1. I do not do foods until well after 12:00 PM so my 16 ounces of cold water and my cup of freshly ground Peets with heavy cream and a pinch of sugar are breakfast. If I could afford to waste calories then I would drink Bloody Mary's, lots of orange juice, grapefruit juice and whole milk.

                                                                        1. Coffee with milk and just a little sugar. I'd rather have no sugar in coffee than have it too sweet.
Orange juice only if I go out for breakfast. When I buy it for the house, we never drink it.
I've never been able to stomach anything carbonated before lunch.

                                                                          1. Coffee & Chicory ~ French Market Brand in the red bag is a a favorite.

                                                                            1. If I've over indulged in cocktails the night before, I need a few glasses of apple juice to help clear the cob webs a bit. Not a huge fan of OJ, but won't refuse a glass.

Other than that coffee, black and lots of it! I switch between iced and hot, but in recent sub-freezing temps it has to be hot, most summer it's iced. I'll drink 2-3 24oz cups a day.

                                                                              1. Tall glass of cold water first, then a mug of coffee with chemical laden flavored coffee creamer which I steal sips from while corralling the kids until the bus comes. ;)

                                                                                1. Tequila and grapefruit juice. Five to two.

                                                                                  1. Tea with skimmed (sorry I'm British) milk. Current favourite is Twinings Everyday. Couldn't even consider drinking anything else.

                                                                                    1. I have strong coffee in the morning. Coffee so strong it'll put hair on a bald man's head. No flavored garbage. Just coffee with a splash of milk. That is the only time I drink coffee during the day. We have a coffee brewing system at the office and it is weak, garbagy, not coffee to me..so the rest of the day I'm a tea drinker. (BTW, I, to was raised a tea drinker--Irish parents and grandparents--ALWAYS had a kettle on the stove)

                                                                                      1. Edit: I totally forgot that I do have a tea on weekend mornings with milk and sugar.

                                                                                        1. Venti Non-Fat Extra Hot One Splenda No Foam Latte

I'm so proud of myself that in the 2 years my daughter has gone to her day care, I've never gone to the Starbucks across the parking lot. I actually recognize some of the cars coming out of the drive thru now

                                                                                          2. Depending on what I did the night before.

Could be a shot of vodka with a chunk of ginger.

                                                                                            Or just some black coffee.

                                                                                            1. Whatever it is, it has to be either extremely cold (water, grapefruit juice, coke zero) or extremely hot (black coffee). I do love Earl Grey but I drink it at night :)

                                                                                              1. OJ or grapefruit juice. First thing. Then breakfast with coffee. Although I wouldn't say no to a very spicy Bloody Caesar if someone offered me one.

                                                                                                1. A glass of milk with breakfast and coffee.

                                                                                                  1. It completely depends on what I'm having for breakfast. I don't have a standard morning beverage.

                                                                                                    1. If I had a heavy night of drinking the night before, I probably start out with a glass of water, but after that, black coffee. If I couldn't have coffee I would choose a Diet Coke instead, but really, I just want coffee!

                                                                                                        1. re: Veggo

That sounds fab if citrus juice is your thing. I'm actually not much of a fan, unless it's in a mimosa, but then I still prefer the orange juice to be combined with another fruit, like orange-mango juice.

                                                                                                      2. I start with a glass of OJ, before 3-4 cups of black coffee.

                                                                                                        1. Mr. Tardigrade makes a pot of coffee every morning, so I drink that. Coffee is too complicated for me to deal before my first jolt of caffeine, so when he used to travel a lot or when we had different schedules I would make tea, since pouring hot water over a tea bag doesn't require much thought.

                                                                                                          1. Strong black tea. Plain.

                                                                                                            1. Monster Zero Ultra.

I'm not really proud of it, but can't handle the caloric load of Mountain Dew and this is the only diet caffeine boost that doesn't taste nasty to me. I've been dealing with tiredness issues lately and just learned that my grandma has narcolepsy. So that's my excuse, I guess.

                                                                                                              1. I don't do caffeine so I like a well sweetened herbal tea in the morn, or just lots of water, or fresh squeezed oj or grapefruit juice or lemonade or limeade; if I have the fruit around, usually leftovers from making cocktails the night before.

                                                                                                                1. choices every day. not doing the same thing twice lately. my choices include:

                                                                                                                  2. chai, with thick cream

                                                                                                                    1. Milk with my breakfast eggs, water while I smugly laugh at the caffeine addicts. ;)
