Table (Frederik de Pue) and Eat the Rich

We started out the evening (last Saturday) with oysters and drinks at Eat the Rich on 7th St. It was fantastic. Loved the Old Salts! The other two Virginia Oysters were great, too. The bar tender was cute, funny and attentive. Only weird thing was that a glass of Argyle Brut Rose was $16 and the bottle was $102..couldn't figure that out. Anyway, can't wait to go back!!!!!

Another story with Table. It was my second visit, the first being last spring, with decent food and a rather snobby waiter. But, I'm always willing to give a second chance especially when I want to like the place so much. We were a table of four, one close friend from Chicago and I really wanted to take her to a fantastic DC dinner. We were seated right away even though a few minutes early. The problems were almost immediate. My friend is a new wine buff following several visits to Oregon and Washington Vineyards and chose a $125 bottle of Pinot Noir. Three of us shared that and the fourth had a glass of some other red. We ordered and waited and waited. We finished the bottle and the waiter brought a different bottle to "suggest". I suppose he took in my surprise and asked if I would like to see the list. In the meantime, we still didn't have food.
He seemed quite disappointed that our second bottle was $75. Then, almost simultaneously, he brought some cheese "on the house" to make up for no food, an amuse bouche (which was the best thing I ate all night..duck confit) and our first plates. The food is very artfully, if sparingly, displayed and manages to surprise at first glance. Eel and scallop with the eel tasking like ham, pork belly and clams were good and rich and fois tourchon - a small bite of rich deliciousness and the smallest piece of endive to accompany. The entrees followed soon after. My friend and I were to share the Dorade and Lamb. The Dorade was placed in front of her and left there with the bone in tact. I could smell the fishiness and was appalled. I said that something was wrong and she said it was okay and she'd eat it. The waiter blew me off. But, I know fish and it is not supposed to be like that. The lamb was very good and the two others like their entrees of bison and lobster, but complained about size. The size didn't worry me at all and I thought they were beautifully plated and served. I remained disgusted by the Dorade which I smelled throughout the meal. My party ordered dessert and continued to have a nice time despite the issues. Then, the check arrived and it was more than $300 more than should have been. I looked and saw this and told the waiter. He said he was sorry and brought another check. We finished and left.
The bad really outweighed the good. I was left with the feeling that I had to call and let the management know about this experience. No one at my table was ever going back (except for me..who will give many chances). I spoke with a lovely woman on the phone the following Monday and she was so concerned and promised to have the manager call. He called the next day and said how sorry he was and that this wasn't how he expected his servers to manage their jobs. He told me he'd send me a gift certificate and hoped that I could come back so that they could show me how the experience at Table should really be, but asked me to promise that I'd let the woman know when I made the next reservation so that she could be sure I was treated well. I received an email within seconds with a gift certificate for $75. I wrote back to decline saying that given the circumstance I wasn't inclined to spend more money at the restaurant.
DC has a great restaurant scene. This is one that I'll never visit again.

  1. Your right fresh fish usually doesn't have a fishy smell must have been old product that was pushed out by the kitchen staff -Yuck

    1. Pardon me, but I'm wondering why you take an out-of-town friend you want to impress to a restaurant you didn't like so much the first time.....

        Well. I guess. That was back in the spring and the food and setting were both great. One snobby waiter doesn't have to ruin the whole restaurant. But, in retrospect, you are right and I shouldn't have gone back.

          You said the food was "decent", now you say it was "great." Just trying to figure out which...

      2. Not sure about your agenda and your continued questioning regarding my motivation. What difference does it make that I made the mistake of returning? I am merely reporting the experience and others can use it in whatever way they choose.

          No secret agenda, I was wondering if your first experience was great or merely decent. I am prompted to ask because of a contradiction.

        2. I live a few blocks away and very badly want to love this place. Friends of mine in the area think quite highly of it.

          I've been for dinner 3 times and brunch once. I've walked away entirely unimpressed by the food every time. I've generally found the service fine, and I love the ambiance of the place. But the food, in my view, has been consistently subpar.

          In fact, we did brunch just recently, and not one dish was memorable. Both entrees served that day (we ordered one of each) were incredibly unappetizing.

          It's so disappointing, because it strikes me as having such wonderful possibility. If others have had a good experience here, I'd appreciate hearing about it, because I can't for the life of me understand why friends of mine from the neighborhood keep going back.
