Lucky Lius--New Downtown Chinese Restaurant Opening Soon

new restaurant scheduled to open up within the next week at the corner of 4th and J (across the street from Cost Plus)...supposedly the chef comes from a top restaurant in San Francisco that serves 'traditional' Chinese food (whatever that means). If it's even half as good as Chef Chu's (Palo Alto), I'll be excited....soft opening for family and friends tentatively scheduled for the end of this week.

So I took the plunge and went for lunch today....not bad, certainly far from the best Chinese I've had, and better than PF Chang's (not as though that's the standard bearer to begin with).

First off, lunch specials will not be offered until the beginning of February. That being said, a large cup of won ton soup (not bad, have definitely had better dumplings) along with a Kung Pao Chicken entree (OK, not the most adventurous dish on the menu) which came with rice ran me $23 with tip (I had tap water)...expensive until they begin offering their lunch special combos in a few weeks....the chicken dish was not bad and what gave it added flavor was a side dish of their chili oil sauce that accompanies every dish they serve.

Nice decor, bar, and I will probably return to give it another shot...probably closer to the now closed Red Pearl Kitchen than PF Chang's (but certainly no Bay area Yank Sing, Betelnut, or Chef Chu's).

I didn't ask, but am curious if this is the same owner (Alex) of Rama and the former Celadon.

      2. Thank you for the review. Sorry to read it is not SGV quality though....sigh. Off topic- have you ever checked out the food trucks that line up on Thursday night next to World Market?

Right now, I'd settle for Kearny Mesa quality in the Gaslamp.

          Baby steps.

Yeah the Gascramp is getting really sketch these days.

              It's really a weird area.

I mean that place has Bucca di Beppo *and* an Old Spaghetti Factor within 3 blocks of one another! How many places can make that claim?

                1. re: Dagney

It's probably more depressing patrolling the area.

My hats off to you, and the rest of SD's finest.

Only a couple more hours before sundown on a Saturday at the gaslamp. Fun times await!

        2. There could also be a Mexican restaurant named Lucky Luis...
