One Final Word on Fruitcake
I think this story can translate into any kind of food making going even beyond the fruitcake. Sometimes you just get into the zone when you are making so much of 1 thing. Like the first time I made 15 dozen cookies. It had a calming effect by the time the 5th dozen was in the oven.
I like to get into the rhythm of cooking even if it's only half an hour getting dinner together. I worked in commercial kitchens during high school and college. There we were dealing with 10 or 20 or 30 meals at a time and every reach, every knife-stroke had to count. I try to achieve the same thing in my little kitchen.
Grab 5 ingredients from the fridge
Turn on the oven as you turn towards the counter
Leave 3 ingredients there and 2 in the sink
Turn on the water to wash the vegetables
Grab a pot and fill it.
Reach for some spices.
Season the meat.
Chop, simmer, stir, repeat.
