    1. Have to agree, but I was an "early adopter"...

Me too...I found out about Tommy on another food bulletin board and have been reading him for quite some time now. I like his reviews, information, etc.

        1. re: ELA

While I do not always agree with tommy...he is refreshing in his reviews and comments. I like the fact he gives his honest assessment....and really doesn't care what you think, otherwise.

          1. re: fourunder

I never really look at whether I agree or not -- but after a while you learn about someone's likes, dislikes, etc. Tommy however is very clear in his reviews about what he likes, dislikes, personal preferences, gripes and so on -- and I appreciate that.

He also doesn't belittle and/or insult others for stating their own opinion, which might disagree or point out something other than his own.

            Good site, good information.

            1. re: ELA

We disagreed over Bistro 55....and my impression was he received special treatment for his plugs, or at the very least special invitations.. I had three bad meals at Bistro 55 and opined the quality had diminished and saw that the business has dropped off significantly from the beginning and after Trickilo left. Even at prime time, I never saw the parking lot full.....he publicly stated here I had it in for them and questioned why I would go back for more than one bad meal....I always liked how he was subversive in being critical of of me and like myself, if he didn't agree....he would use phrases like * citations Please*...or* what exactly is notable about xxx place or the food*. At least it was an intellectual argument seeking information, not like some others...and we know who they are.

I didn't hold it against him.

              1. re: fourunder

Wasn't aware of any of that. I don't remember his review(s) of Bistro 55 either. I know a few have been accused of receiving comps, special perks, whatever -- BUT -- and I stress BUT -- I had never heard that about him. I also never saw him ridicule others like I've seen people here and at another BB do. Subversive or not -- personally, I can't stand that. I think it says everything about the author and nothing about the recipient.

Like I said, I am unaware of any of that.

                  1. re: ELA

I've only ever known Tommy to be up front about invitations he has received -- usually b/c he makes it clear that he doesn't accept (most of?) them. He's also usually honest about when he has gotten to know a chef or FOH people.

And full disclosure--as fourunder knows, I am one of his many fans and consider him a pal--but one of the reasons I respect him so much is that he hasn't fallen into the food blogger get-what-I-can-for-free trap!

                    1. re: Curlz

I'll tell you the one area he is not so nice.....he thinks he knows pizza better than everyone else...

                      : 0 )

        2. Why did I open that link before lunch? I am so freakin hungry now! Wonderful list. Thanks, Tommy.

Oh, yeah...fellow 'hounds, do NOT open that link unless you've already eaten! hehe

            1. re: Curlz

If Porta opens up for lunch I may walk down there for some octopus, if not, I know what I am having for dinner

              1. re: roro1831

Their cold octopus salad and the warmed version are both excellent.

                1. re: HillJ

I've not had the cold wasn't aware that was on the menu. The cold brussel sprout salad was good. We were planning to go tonight anyway

                  1. re: roro1831

I look forward to reading about your meal. I haven't had the brussel sprout salad but their menu changes pretty often. The lemon pizza this summer was also pretty darn delicious.

Have fun! The roads should be fine by tonight.

                    1. re: HillJ

Roads won't be an issue, I live at the next corner

                      1. re: roro1831

Lucky! I drive 30 mins to reach Porto but I'm not complaining.

                        1. re: roro1831

                          It's official. I hate you.

                          (said with love)

Well to each of you... When the summer rolls around and you are heading down feel free to stop for a drink on my porch. Corner of 1st and Bergh, white house

                            1. re: roro1831

Why thank you roro. That's very kind.

                              1. re: roro1831

                                Very kind offer...thank you...

                                1. re: roro1831

Okay...hating you a little less now. :-) Thanks! Very kind indeed.

                            2. re: HillJ

Had the octopus with a side of meatballs, outstanding as always. The winter menu went into place last night

                              1. re: roro1831

We are heading over to Porta for lunch today. It looks like the winter menu is not online yet. What was different?

                                1. re: seal

Hmmm hard to say as I had a few too many drinks and due to Celiac I don't look at the pasta or pizza menu. I do know they took the short rib on polenta off
I just looked at the online menu and the winter menu is up

                                2. re: roro1831

Nice. I was thinking of you @ dinner while I was feasting on my own Swedish meatballs and pierogi.
