TOMMY concentrates on northern N.J., Bergen county, etc.......I live in central Jersey, so I seldom read him.

Yes, I've heard a couple of people say that. I never took hard notice of it, perhaps because I concentrate on Northern NJ and I am a captive audience.

I like his "style" and as fourunder said -- refreshing, and I feel he gives his honest opinion/assessment. I read, listen so to speak, learn, take what I like and leave the rest. I've never seen him "attack" others, insult them, or -- as I've seen people here do -- speak as "fact" and what they say is gospel. He might be definitive, but I don't feel he states it as though everyone has to listen. Just my personal opinion.

"He also doesn't belittle and/or insult others for stating their own opinion, which might disagree or point out something other than his own".

Boy is that not true. If you get on his wrong side he will come at you full force. He's usually right, though.

That is probably what got him kicked off here.

If Porta opens up for lunch I may walk down there for some octopus, if not, I know what I am having for dinner

Their cold octopus salad and the warmed version are both excellent.

I've not had the cold wasn't aware that was on the menu. The cold brussel sprout salad was good. We were planning to go tonight anyway

I look forward to reading about your meal. I haven't had the brussel sprout salad but their menu changes pretty often. The lemon pizza this summer was also pretty darn delicious.

Have fun! The roads should be fine by tonight.

Had the octopus with a side of meatballs, outstanding as always. The winter menu went into place last night

We are heading over to Porta for lunch today. It looks like the winter menu is not online yet. What was different?

Hmmm hard to say as I had a few too many drinks and due to Celiac I don't look at the pasta or pizza menu. I do know they took the short rib on polenta off
I just looked at the online menu and the winter menu is up

While I do not always agree with tommy...he is refreshing in his reviews and comments. I like the fact he gives his honest assessment....and really doesn't care what you think, otherwise.

I never really look at whether I agree or not -- but after a while you learn about someone's likes, dislikes, etc. Tommy however is very clear in his reviews about what he likes, dislikes, personal preferences, gripes and so on -- and I appreciate that.

He also doesn't belittle and/or insult others for stating their own opinion, which might disagree or point out something other than his own.

                          Good site, good information.

We disagreed over Bistro 55....and my impression was he received special treatment for his plugs, or at the very least special invitations.. I had three bad meals at Bistro 55 and opined the quality had diminished and saw that the business has dropped off significantly from the beginning and after Trickilo left. Even at prime time, I never saw the parking lot full.....he publicly stated here I had it in for them and questioned why I would go back for more than one bad meal....I always liked how he was subversive in being critical of others...like of me and like myself, if he didn't agree....he would use phrases like * citations Please*...or* what exactly is notable about xxx place or the food*. At least it was an intellectual argument seeking information, not like some others...and we know who they are.

I didn't hold it against him.

Wasn't aware of any of that. I don't remember his review(s) of Bistro 55 either. I know a few have been accused of receiving comps, special perks, whatever -- BUT -- and I stress BUT -- I had never heard that about him. I also never saw him ridicule others like I've seen people here and at another BB do. Subversive or not -- personally, I can't stand that. I think it says everything about the author and nothing about the recipient.

Like I said, I am unaware of any of that.

I've only ever known Tommy to be up front about invitations he has received -- usually b/c he makes it clear that he doesn't accept (most of?) them. He's also usually honest about when he has gotten to know a chef or FOH people.

And full disclosure--as fourunder knows, I am one of his many fans and consider him a pal--but one of the reasons I respect him so much is that he hasn't fallen into the food blogger get-what-I-can-for-free trap!
