Casual dining options? Po boys?

Will be staying in Warehouse district in February. No problems taking St Charles streetcar or cab to dine. Mahoney's for po boys? Cochon Butcher? Column's Hotel for happy hour?

    I cannot recommend Cochon Butcher highly enough. The Buckboard Bacon Melt and Pork Belly sandwiches are particular favorites of mine (of course, if pork is your thing).

    Not really casual dining but Domenica has a great happy hour with half price pizzas 3-6 every day.

      Oh my! I think Cochon Butcher is a must. And, happy hour pizza at Domenica sounds great! I just checked out their pizza menu- any recommendations?

        It's tough for me to resist the Bolzano - roasted pork shoulder, fennel, bacon, caramelized onions - but I've really enjoyed every pizza I've had there.

            the Bolzano is really good. i also like the mushroom w/ yard egg.

            We recently ate there and the duck and sweet potato pizza was wonderful. Highly recommend the kale too....

            Po-boys are such a personal subject.

            Along with the recs. so far, I am a big fan of Parkway Bakery, and feel that it's worth a short cab ride, or a streetcar + a little walk in the day time.

            I also am a fan of the Fried Shrimp Po-boy at Felix's, in the FQ, but some are not so much.

            Most of all, enjoy!

              I ditto Bill's selection: Parkway is well worth the cab ride and if you can't get there Felix's is more than passable. (Great to take back to the hotel, too!) I have not done Mahoney's but it is a fun area of Magazine, well worth window shopping as I recall.

              And as lovely as the Columns architecture is, I found the interior dreary during HH. It is well worth seeing *once* but (unless I went back on an April Day for the outside patio) I would skip it.

              In my first couple of NOLA visits, I found the FQ "standards" fun for happy hour, and particularly if you want to make a meal/crawl of multiple appetizers -- Mr. B's and Pelican Club come to mind.

                Speaking as a long veteran at the Columns, I know just what you mean about the "dreary" inside but I rise to say that the darkness is, fo me, part of the pleasure. When I was 20 years old it was gloomy but not unpleasant. The years have increased my delight in dark places..especially when they are quiet.(So why do I love Galatoire's? Fair question)

                  point well taken, hh. i think if i had been @ the bar i would have liked it better. my expectations were too high ..we were too many tucked in a booth and the sevice was nearly nonexistent. i'll try it again because i'm staying at the b/w hotel on st. charles next visit.

                Am I the only one who felt let down by Parkway? I am a roast beef hound, and my quest is to find the best roast beef po'boy in New Orleans. I've tried the most commonly named places at least once in the past 10 years or so that I've been coming to New Orleans. I finally tried Parkway last year. The roast beef had a mushy consistency, like it had been cooked to death. And it was a bit on the salty side. From all I had read, I had been anticipating perhaps the best roast beef po'boy yet, but I really felt let down. I have no idea if my one experience was representative or if they just had a bad day. (I'd be happy to give them another chance!) I was also caught off guard by the huge (new?) seating area outside. I hadn't pictured that. Has Parkway's increased notoriety in the past several years made them too smug? Are they letting their standards get lax?

                mahony's poboys are REALLY expensive, and not exceptional. look elsewhere (parkway or KPB or Gene's or something) Luke happy hour is a good option in nearby CBD. ruby slipper for brunch also. dont do Rock n Sake - that place is awful. i hear 7 on fulton is pretty good. happy hour at the Nail!

                  Woah. Gene's? Gene's is sort of okay at two in the morning and you're in need of grease to soften the alcoholic churning in your gut. Even then Verti Marte is probably a saner choice.

                  Mahony's puts out a better than average poboy (I'm a fan of the root beer glazed ham) and their onion rings are indeed exceptional. It's not the cheapest poboy place for sure but they provide good value.

                    eh, everybody needs to eat at gene's once. it's an institution.

                    mahony's is terrible "value" IMO - same ingredients and bread as everyone else, but they want $22 for an oyster or shrimp poboy. GTFO.

                      I dunno. If a dozen raw at Luke rings in at, say, $15 why is it out of line for a good oyster poboy to cost less? But if you're seriously recommending Gene's I don't think we'll ever see eye to eye on this -- fortunately there are many options.

                        I call foul: Luke's dozen raw come with table service. Mahoney's isn't offering any experience better than countless other oyster or shrimp poboys around NOLA. Slow service and a premium price....the 'burbs are full of equally tasty sandwiches at a lower price and time investment.

                          raw and fried oysters are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PRODUCTS, especially from a cost standpoint. fried come in to restaurants raw in a big tub, are fried on-site, and are quite cheap. naturally, raw come in as raw oysters, and cost considerably more per unit.

                            Let me rephrase a justly moderated post:

                            It's worrisome to me that the product that's been processed more costs less -- but that's a digression for another venue.

                            At any rate, Mahony's: I like the onion rings and the bar there and felt that dismissing it out of hand because it's more expensive was doing the place a disservice. I think the kids who work there are friendly, it's in a neighborhood I like to visit, and I know enough not to go if I'm in a rush. (You'll note I never implied they were fast.) The difference in price as a percentage between there and other places can be dramatic (for the oyster and shrimp offerings) but in real dollars it's the price of a swishy cocktail.

                            Now Gene's ... They're responsible for one of the worst take-out experiences I've had. It's a shame too because they would be the closest place for me to get a poboy. I've got nothing against cheap: Frady's and the N. Rampart Food Store both make my cut as do Hank's and Sal's. Even the Frenchmen St. Deli has served in a pinch. I'll have to give Today's Seafood a try.

                              fair comments. myself, id never recommend Gene's -- all it's good for is a crummy hot sausage at 2 in the morning, and even that id prefer to get elsewhere...my last experience tasted like there was cleaning solvent on the griddle. and they dont do seafood. so for late nite eats it's either NOLA Poboy's on Bourbon (used to be Nola Grocery next to Butcher) for the spicy shrimp, or Verti Mart, or Hank's.

                              but neither would i recommend Mahony's -- they're expensive, slow, and frankly not that great. a couple items stood out to me, like the meatball, or the onion rings, but other items were really bland and disappointing. cant think of a reason to go there, really. a flat tire, i guess.

                          LOL @ the Gene's hate. i get it, i really do...i suppose there should be a "budget poboy showdown" where nothing over like $9 is even considered. i like a lot of the cheap poboys places downtown...hank's, capt sal's, today's seafood, etc...there's a good one on st bernard too. and my corner vietnamese place does a pretty respectable fried shrimp poboy for $5.99.

                    Why no love for Johnny's Po-Boys? Their roast beef lo-boy is one of the best, IMO.

                        I wrote that about Mahony's and made myself hungry. Unfortunately it's pouring the rain, Mahony's is across town, and, well, I ride a motorcycle. Alas, details.

                        I agree about it being personal. I think I'm less enthusiastic about Parkway (and others) because the three napkin lunch just isn't my thing out at a restaurant. My loss, to be sure, but so far my hypnotherapist hasn't been able to help with the messy-in-public hangup. (To be fair, it's the least of my issues.)

                        Now, three martinis? Three hours? Three venues? *That* is my kind of lunch.

                          m, sorry about the logistics, I hear ya!

                          thanks for helping us to understand your deepest inner workings regarding this "hangup." I am a bit surprised --- but support you in speaking your truth. (What about the tater tots you mentioned in a previous post, that sounds a little messy!)

                          I love a multiple napkin meal -- especially if I end up losing most of them mysteriously, as one would a sock in the dryer.

                          Also, I am unsure HOW you could do the three martinis and not be messy-in-public, (LOL) but I'd like to tag along and learn.

                          Sans rain do you have three martini spots you might recommend for a lunch crawl?

                        i like Johnny's as a go-to poboy place in the quarter. line can be long these days. but ironically of all their poboys (they have 50!) the RB was one of my least favorites. maybe it was a weird day but it was sliced and watery, didnt get any good love from it. i do get a kick out of the Johnny's Special (RB, ham, swiss, american) but most days i stick to the skrimps.
