Dallas Gram visit, need restaurant help!

My husband, two daughters and I are visiting my grandmother in Dallas this February. She's lovely but not the best at restaurant suggestions. We live in Chicago and would love to try Dallas Mexican and BBQ (my husband loves Arthur Bryants in KC). Suggestions? We will be staying near the Galleria but can travel, somewhat, reasonably close would be best. Also, my Dad used to love a Mexican place near Love Field, I was very young but remember that they served warm tortillas with butter before dinner. Sound familiar to anyone? Unfortunately Dad's not here to help and I think my husband would love this place. Thanks so much for the help!

You can get a good tour (and reviews) of Dallas Tex-Mex and barbeque at dallasfood.org. Some of the bbq places suggested there are real dives, though. Bbq places with good food and decent surroundings that I like are Baker's Ribs in Deep Ellum, Sammy's in the State-Thomas area near downtown, and Big Al's, near Love Field.

I'll leave it to other to recommend Tex-Mex, but for Mex-Mex I recommend Veracruz in Oak Cliff, Cafe San Miguel on Henderson, Nuevo Leon on lower Greenville, and Ciudad on Oak Lawn.

The Tex-Mex place your dad liked may have been Mia's.

I would not recommend going to the old Nuevo Leon location on Greenville if you are looking for any food at all, though those other choices for Mex are all solid.

    2. I agree with the suggestion of Mia's on Lemmon it's near Love Field and yummy Tex Mex - try the brisket tacos. I would also recommend Smokey John's BBQ on Mockingbird near Love Field.

      1. For something not too far from the Galleria, I'd go to Cuquita's (Belt Line & Spring Valley) for Mexican. I'm unaware of any worthwhile barbecue that far north.

I second Cuquita's, though I think the cross street of the one on Spring Valley is actually Coit. Also, depending on which side of the Galleria you are staying there is a location at 13260 Josey Ln. in Farmers Branch which may actually be closer.
