  1. There was a piece on Nosh about it in November:

    * Co-owner Emiliano Cecchetti said the reason Caravaggio’s kitchen looks more like a lab is because he takes a scientific approach to making gelato.

    * They say their gelato is made to exacting standards in authentic Italian style and uses all natural ingredients, and organic where possible

    * No high-fructose corn syrup, no sucrose, the gelato is also lactose-free

    1. We were walking by soon after they opened and decided to walk in. The person behind the counter offered us samples of a few gelato flavors (including a balsamic fig) as well as a taste of a fig sorbet. As I recall, everything we tried was fairly good, but the fig sorbet was so good that we ordered it.

      1. I tried Turkish pistachio (they alternate those with California pistachios) gelato and pear and pineapple sorbets but went with hazelnut gelato. Best I've had in a long time. Not too sweet, finish was nutty rather than cloying. Definitely reminded me of Italy.

The work area is a licensed dairy. They treat all the milk with lactase so it's lactose-free, and use isomaltulose instead of regular sugar. Kind of geeky but the taste speaks for itself.

It's in the former Cioccolato di Vino space.

I also had the hazelnut gelato last month -- it was among the best I've had outside of Italy. But that was the only flavor I tasted.

This destination skyrocketed to the top of my to eat list and I was impressed. Having tried a lot of unworthy hazelnut gelato in the US (and plenty of mediocre ones in Italy too), Caravaggio's was excellent. Lots of hazelnut flavor. Top 10 including Italy, top 3 outside Italy.

        2. Tried out Caravaggio Gelateria Italiana which is near the Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck, from Downtown Berkeley Bart it's up the road, stay on the Right-side of the street.

You can get samples. I got a bunch to try. They named it for an Italian artist last name Caravaggio.

Gelato maker (black shirt) makes small batches & makes them daily. Different flavors daily, but there are some that are always there like Amaretto, Gianduja, etc. On the menu when I went there were 12 flavors. Tomorrow Sun 1/26/14 they'll have Strawberry sorbet; Pineapple sorbet; Pear sorbet!

          Baby one flavor $2.50
          2 flavors $3.75
          3 flavors $4.75
          Extra large to go $10

Only in cups, no cones. Gelato maker said maybe in a few months for cones. They've been open for 2 months so still new.

Amaretto is Awesome. It's the Blue shirt guy favorite flavor. If you like almond cookies you'll love it. Hazelnut is good, very rich.

All the flavors are Great! Go give them a try. You can charge it too.
