The Dandelion Pub was Fantastic!

More specifically the Brioche French Toast was divine! I must go again. The coffee, tea, bacon and sausage were good as well. Even the service was great. The only thing I would order again is the Spinach Cheddar Omelette.
For my first time, I wasn't disappointed. Loved everything about the place, the atmosphere, food, selection, service and etc.

  1. We were just there. As usual, Steven Starr combines very good food with excellent "theatrics." My biggest complaint? Like many restaurants these days, it is unpleasantly loud at times, especially on Friday and Saturday. Dining is a social moment. If you are shouting at your dinner mates then the restaurant is no good. Of course, many restaurants in the city and burbs have this problem, and Dandelion is very pleasant if you can get there at a "non-prime" time. Of course, for Belgium beers places like Monk's and the Belgium Tavern in the Fairmont / Museum area are better choices. For German Beers, I would suggest Brahaus Schmidt. All of these have good food, too.

        If you are a meat eater, go for the crispy pork belly. A great cold weather dish.

        Everyone raves about the fish and chips here, and the burger is quite good.

        If you like liver the pork terrine or chicken and duck liver parfait are great ways to begin the meal.

        If you ever go on a Sunday or a bank holiday (read Monday holiday like MLK day or Presidents Day) the roast beef and yorkshire pudding is a must.

          +1 on the pork belly and liver parfait. I liked the roast beef special but probably would not order it again. Go for it if you're in the mood but not a must IMO.

              OT: What does she think of the French food in Philly. Not that there are very many places...Bibou, Le Cheri, Bistro La Minette... (I suppose you could debatably consider Lacroix French cuisine).

                Cochon is also very good, if you like pork. SoCrepe around 15th and South is a good creperie. So is Beau Monde. There's more, but I must dash.

                  She likes the French cuisine, but at heart is more of a boulangerie girl so is always a bit skeptical of the breads outside of France.

                  That said, she loves Bibou. She is from Brittany, so has a soft spot for some of the fisherman-style dishes (e.g. Coquilles St. Jacques) and claims that's the only place that has a floating island dessert which signals real French.

                  She also has a great time at BLM. She really respects the attention to detail there, and is complimentary about the bread (that's difficult!). I have heard her say the sauces can be heavy handed, but that may be just because she feels bad for eating so much when going out. ;)

                  We haven't been to Le Cheri, yet, but that's on the docket for Friday evening!! Can't wait!!

                  She is not a huge fan of Beau Monde. Too noisy, but that may be good for the scene.

                  Surprisingly, she's a big fan of Parc. It seems to nail some of the overall ambiance and she's less fru-fru French cuisine and more into the quality of the ingredients and execution of staples.

                  She did not like Lacroix. Overly fancy w/o enough substance.

                  She was not a huge fan of Caribou Cafe, but that was years ago.

                  We should try Cochon.

                  There's a bakery in New Hope called C'est La Vie where she's special ordered cakes and they execute the classic ham and butter on a baguette very well.

                    Thanks for the interesting and detailed reply.

                    I enjoyed Cochon the one time I've been, but found it pretty heavy cuisine, and not in the same league as Bibou.

                      Have you tried the baguette and croissants from Artisan Boulanger Patissier in South Philly?

                      About Cochon, I like it a lot, would never compare it to Bibou which I agree is another league but is also going for completely different type of food and experience.

                        There is a Bakery in Souderton, "Bakers on Broad", owned and operated by a French ex-pat. baker. Their breads are awesome

                            If you're ever on the Main Line, Georges Perrier's Art of Bread on Montgomery Ave makes some nice baguettes and croissants. Best if you go early and get them still warm. They don't hold up well over time.

                    I'm not French. I simply wish I were. I haven't been to France for a few years, but if my memory serves me right, Alice in North Wales has the most authentic baguette and pain au chocolat that I've had in the US. They have some other delicious breads as well.

              2. Moving a tiny bit away from the French side of things, we find that good baking is good baking. Philly has many fine bakeries that are not necessarily "pure French," whatever that really means in our global and cross-cultural age.

                In that spirit, I would say that in addition to the excellent Metropolitan Bakery and Le Bus, which many people know, we also like the new and very large bakery on 22nd and Washington called Kermit's. They are mostly into desserts, but you can get good, albeit denser baguettes there and they also apply their baking skills to pizzas, believe it or not.

                1. I usually avoid most "British Pub" manifestations in the States unless I have knowledge with or heard of them from a reliable source. I have frequented the Dandelion and enjoyed the visit with the exception of a few dishes not really executed in the manner to which I am accustom. The comment by PP about the noise is true to my experiences there, over-the-top. I am not sure if this is a Philadelphia thing or just generational but I have noticed it in Philadelphia more frequently than in other cities.

                    I'm curious which dishes were not executed in the way you are accustomed?

                    About noise, it is an epidemic here but I have had the same issues with noise in New York City. Two Philly things -- Steven Starr restaurants like Dandelion tend to be the worst around here as the creation of noise is very deliberate. They will raise the volume of music to make people talk louder. This is common at many restaurants everywhere now, but Starr really pushes it, I think it goes back to his background as a concert promoter and his business model of restaurant as theater. Also, the many small BYOBs we have tend to be very loud due to the cramped spaces with many people.

                      I do recall thinking the Cumberland sausage was not served in the form I expected and seems less than the proper recipe. The Bangers and Mash were a bit on the soupy side although I would guess the BB were Heinz. Did like the Fish and Chip which could have had a bit more chips.

                      Thanks for your comments on the noise levels in Philadelphia. My sampling is less than a valid representation regarding this issue. I do struggle when seeking a destination for good food a Philadelphia venue supporting a normal(?) conversational environment.
