Help! Need Horseradish TODAY

I am responsible for bringing horseradish to Christmas dinner tonight. In my rush of last-minute shopping I forgot to buy it. It's a big part of the dinner, since we're having roast beef. I read that Oasis Market in Oakland is open today, but it's a verry long shot that a Mid-Eastern market would carry horseradish.

SO, if anybody who lives in Oakland or Berkeley has some to spare I will gladly pay for it. If you don't want me to come to your house I could pick it up at the curb.

Thank you.

  1. My local Safeway carries fresh roots. You might try there.

I've gone to Safeway on Christmas because they were the only store open.

Yes, there are Safeways that are open ON CHRISTMAS.

      2. What I would do: go to Oasis Market and get a few spicy/sharp Middle Eastern condiments and tell your dinner mates that you thought, for this Christmas, it would be fun to try a modern/multiculti iteration of the tired old combination of roast beef w/ horseradish.

Sort of a variant of Julia Child's saying something like, if you burn the sweet potatoes, serve them without apology, as a new delicacy.

Or just fess up as to the reason for the Middle Eastern condiments, if a tall tale on Christmas Day feels wrong.

A while back I was about to serve a trad shrimp cocktail and realized I had neither horseradish nor ketchup and instead mixed together mayo and Sriracha sauce and lemon juice; and it was, of course, delicious. How new traditions are created!

        1. I'd try calling Jewish delis. At least one should be open on Xmas.

They're out eating the traditional Jewish Chinese Christmas dinner.
