Bunny Chow

Reading a travel article on South Africa and came across this. A loaf of bread hollowed and filled with curried veg or meats; very popular in SA (especially Durban area). Wondering if anyone in Vancouver has heard of this and if it is on any restaurant menus here?

  1. I've come across this as a lunch special at the Loop cafe in UBC's CiRS building. It was horrible - about 3 times as much bread as bland stew. Probably not representative since it was UBC food services.

      Once saw it on a fast food place menu @ Tinseltown but staff had no idea how to make it-seriously-anyway that operation disappeared shortly thereafter.

        Thanks to both of you... suspect it is a regional thing. Guess will have to spring for a trip to SA to try it in its home environment!

    2. I seriously doubt you'll see a competent bunny chow here. But I do love the biltong and drywors at African Breese on West 4th and Alma. I think they have an older location in North Van too.

          Some pics of the shop and biltong -- which I learned is pronounced "bull-tong" :/
