  1. The Counter at Kahala Mall has a good one, and Bubbie's near UH is another.

ok, lol, had to try these two back to back. stopped at the counter and got vanilla malt. $6.50 plus tax. one size only, it was very large. the shake was light and airy, too much for my liking. taste was good. overall so-so.

after hitting the dogpark, we stopped at bubbies koko marina and got... a vanilla malt! $5.50 including tax. size was about the same as the counter. the ice cream tasted better, more malt flavor, and thick, hard to suck up the straw for a minute or two, then easily consumed. my favorite of the three, followed by honolulu burger co. then the counter.

after that we had to hit makapuu trail to burn off a few of those calories.

all you have left to try then is teddys. LOL - also at Koko Marina (and 9 other places on Oahu)

yeah, we scoped out teddys when we were at koko marina, but my gut and waistline couldn't handle more than two malts.

also wondered if fatboys had them. they're at koko marina, and kailua too.

i think the key is not to have milk. meaning a thicker, tastier shake and no stomach upset for me. dunno why, but milk, even a small amount, makes me sick and ice cream doesn't, even in large quantities. quality ice cream is a given, and maybe the brand of malt powder, i haven't ever bought any to compare.

My friend is lactose intolerant but has it down to a science what her body can tolerate. Milk no, cream yes. Super premium ice cream has a high enough fat content / low enough lactose for her.

    2. For once we are in agreement! Mine was chocolate.

I'm told the ones at Teddy's are good too but I have yet to try one there. Come to think of it I haven't had one from Bubbie's either.

      1. made my own with ovaltine malt powder and ben and jerrys vanilla. just soft icecream stirred with a spoon until drinkable through a straw with a few scoops of malt powder. i'd say equal to bubbies but this is better - more cost effective and able to customize as i like - i only made about a cup of milkshake.

i have some haagen daz chocolate waiting to be malted another day.

chocolate haagen daz's flavor overpowers the malt in ovaltine. perhaps i ought to try plain malt powder. others have mentioned canned malted milk, but i want to avoid the milk.

        2. Can't say for Oahu, but Teddy's in Lahaina makes a mean chocolate malt.

just tried teddy's beretania. choc malt. i think they use haagen daz, tasted just like the malt i made at home. a great choc milkshake, but no hint of malt, the icecream's dusky flavor was overpowering to the poor malted barley.

i have to say, teddy's burgers are much better than before! they did a fairly nice rare, the bun was light without being crumbly or spongy. onions, tomato, pickles, lettuce standard. sauce was good, no heavy mayo. overall the sandwich didn't just sit and stick in the gut and leave an oily feeling. we had the 7oz with fries and the malt, pricey at over $14.
