Herring help, please!

We find ourselves in the UK this Christmas (and for many more!). Scandinavian pickled herring is a family favorite, and I could not find any around here to purchase. I got the idea to do it myself using salted herring and found a wonderful US supplier, but had difficulty here. I decided this was correct and it just arrived now. However, it seems pretty clearly smoked and salted to me. Can anyone tell me if there is anyway to have pickled herring using this? I can still get fresh herring, but that seemed like that would still have to be salted (for a couple of weeks) before it could be used to pickle. If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them. If not, I guess we have a lot of smoked herring to enjoy...

  1. Whereabouts in the UK are you?
I've not found much trouble finding pickled herring but then I am in London.

I'm in Cambridge. My MIL is picking up some in London to bring, so I think it will work out okay. I haven't found it at Tesco or Sainsbury here...
