Austin during SXSW Music Festival?

My husband and I are thinking of visiting our friend who just moved from Philadelphia to Austin. We're going to be flying from Philadelphia to San Antonio however because the airfare is much cheaper than flying into Austin for some reason. She suggested coming during SXSW because we love going to shows. Has anyone been to the festival? I would also like some input on the drive from San Antonio to Dallas and anything interesting to see (and places to eat of course) in San Antonio besides the Alamo. We're only going to spend a long weekend in Texas, so we want to maximize the time that we have and not waste it. Thanks!

  1. There have been many discussions on this board about good chow in San Antonio and Austin. May I suggest you do a search of these two cities and re-post? It's difficult to give good feedback without knowing what kinds of food or restaurants sound appealing to you.

If you just want someone to give you the usual suspects, however, I'm sure we can oblige.

    1. Hi-

Please do discuss the chow in Texas here, anything else, though, is not on topic.

      Thanks.

      1. Jeanette,
If you want, e-mail me and I'll give you some info on SXSW.
If you are coming from San Antonio, you should plan on a stop in Lockhart(BBQ capitol of Texas!) for BBQ. SMitty's,Kreutz,Blacks, & Chisholm Trail all have their fans.
Also, New Braunfels is between AUstin & SA, and is a German settlement, so there is some good German fare & music there too.
