Replying to a thread more than once

I have found on three of my devices, that I am no longer able to reply more than once to a thread without hitting the refresh button. Once I refresh all the posts will go grey and I prefer not to sift through all the dates to figure out which ones to re-opn. Basically the Reply button is only there once. I can reply once and then when I type a reply to another post in that thread in the same reading session, I can type the whole thing but then there is no reply button to submit.

On the PCs (using both Internet Explorer and Firefox) this isn't as much of a hassle if I open a word document and copy and paste and refresh but on the iphone 4 (old operating system) it basically is a waste of time.

      Yes.

    2. Apologies for the error, I suspect I know what's causing this. We'll look into it.

        Update, still happening.

        Thanks for looking into it!

Day 3 or 4 ...still no change

        2. re: Engineering

Still happening. Firefox on both Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.8.

          1. re: Engineering

No problem on the Mac, with Safari

          2. We released a change today that we hope will fix this. Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Thanks for the report, we'll have another look.

              2. re: DeborahL

                Not fixed for me either.

              3. Argh! Thought it was fixed but maybe the problem was I hadn't tried to post twice lately.

                1. No change.

Computer works. iPhone 4 Safari old version of iOS still not working.

                  2. This is still a problem.

                    1. Still happening (and had been for the last couple of months or so) that I am coming to the Site Talk board just to check! It is increasingly annoying and removes some of the joy of leisurely reading through a thread and responding to posts as I come across them.

I hope there is a fix soon and thanks. I am on Firefox 18.0.1 and my current workaround is to "duplicate tab" and relocate the post that I wish to respond to. Then paste my response from the non-working page (with reply button missing) to the duplicated page. The relocating gets tedious when the thread gets long, obviously.

Also, if I remember correctly, if I reload the page (instead of duplicating), the Reply button appears but my response would be a child of the original post and not of the post I wanted to respond to.

                        1. re: vil

Yes, that sounds right to me. I have to go back to the main board page and go to the topic again.

                      2. It just happened to me.

                        1. Yep, still happening. On a laptop at that.

                          1. Still not possible to do without reloading.

                            2. Thanks for all the reports on this thread. Unfortunately, we've never been able to reproduce the issue on our end, which makes it extremely difficult for us to pinpoint the cause. We're continuing to look into it.

Isn't that odd? Maybe create your own 'personal' account and see what happens?

                                1. re: DeborahL

Seems bizarre to me that you can't reproduce it. I've encountered it in several browsers on both Windows and Mac.

                                2. Looks like this is caused by an add-on, at least in Firefox. In safe mode the problem goes away.

Maybe that is something I can look into if the problem does not go away.

                                  2. I was having a similar problem a month or 2 ago, but chalked it up to a bad/slow connection, it does seem to be gone now (mine was a post wouldn't register and I doubleplusposted a few times - mods deleted the excess eventually)

Seems to be working for me today without having to disable add-ons.

                                    2. Still happening.

                                          1. This is still happening. What's up please?

                                            1. I don't have this issue with mac on safari.

                                                      Hmmm. I got a OS X 10.7.5.

Think that might be the issue here?

Full disclosure: I do run AdBlock Plus & Ghostery. More disclosure: I only really switched from Safari to Chrome b/c the CH site was acting up like crazy on it. I was really fine with Safari, but it was driving me nuts.

And now this issue on Chrome. Perhaps go back to Netscape?

I can't read with animations on the screen.

no, but I only use safari. I quit using firefox when I went to a mac. From reading the thread it's hard to tell what the source of the problem is since it seems to be random people across operating systems and web browsers.

                                                  2. Worked OK for me once today, but I came here to report that and the problem is back. Hmmm.

If I try a third time, no reply button exists at all, just the continuing spinning circle.

That's the perplexing thing- most of us use Chrome for work on the site daily, but as far as I'm aware we've never managed to get this to happen in the office. The same goes for any other combination of browser and operating system we've tried, which suggests that the underlying problem is something else. Unfortunately, having ruled those factors out means that we have no remaining leads at this time. If anyone experiencing this problem can provide any additional information (such as a javascript error message, unusual browser plugins, or anything else noteworth) it would be a big step in the right direction. In the interrim, thank you all for all of the information you've made available, as well as for bearing with us thus far.

                                                                                  1. re: c oliver

Welllllll. I may have found MY problem. When I installed Ad Blocker Plus I also installed Ghostery. I just told it to ignore chowhound.com and now it seems to be okay. Could it really have been this easy? Time will tell. Somebody needs to post a bunch of stuff where I need to reply multiple times :) Ssh, don't tell Jacq!

                                                                                    1. re: c oliver

CO FTW! Fixed it!!!! I'ma reply the shit out of threads now.

                                                                                      :-D

                                                                                      1. re: linguafood

Snorting my coffee :) Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                                                                        1. re: linguafood

...considering what little I know about Ghostery I am at a complete loss as to how it was causing the described behavior, but I'm not about to look the gift horse in the mouth. Glad to hear the matter is resolved for the both of you; with any luck this will prove the answer for the others as well.

                                                                                          1. re: Engineering

When I went poking around on their site I found this:

"Note: Blocking may interfere with webpages in unexpected ways. If you experience issues with videos, logins, comment forms, etc., tell Ghostery to not block anything on that page by adding it to the Whitelisted Sites list below."

Totally with you on the "gift horse" philosophy :)
