Trip Report: Michy's, Michael's Genuine, Nexxt Cafe, Larios
We came down for a quick sailing trip and managed to do some interesting eating.
Nexxt Cafe. An absolute nightmare. I should really know better than to eat anywhere on Lincoln Road. The service: slower than molasses. The food - congealed cheeses, sweet sauces served with raw tuna tacos, burgers that are too big to actually bite into. Everything is too sweet, too cold, too late, too terrible. I really wish we had just gone to Sushi Samba. At least their food comes out in a reasonable amount of time.
MIchael's Genuine Food & Drink: We were in a great gallery in the design district and fancied a drink. Luckily, Michael's Genuine was open for happy hour. They have a fabulously hoppy Florida IPA on tap and the bartending is solid. We sampled delicious chicken liver crostini and herbacious falafel. We will be back.
Michy's. It's possible my expectations were far too high for this Miami institution. Everything was good, yes, and service was impeccable, but only one dish was truly a revelation: the white gaspacho. Fluke entree was probably the least interesting, with sweet breads and ceviche producing solid, if uninspiring flavors.The ceviche really could have used some acid. I even thought the baked Alaska was a little sad - I couldn't detect an ounce of dulche de leche, though a fruit & nut accompaniment really brightened up the dish.
Casa Larios: Fun atmosphere, decent Cuban. Bright, citrus, spicy shrimp ceviche made my mouth sing. Tostones were exactly in line with all others I've ever had in my life. Papa rellenos - in all fairness, I prefer the ones at Versailles, but really, what's bad about meat-filled mashed potatoes? I had the Italian livers for dinner, which were an excellent rendition of the dish. The man had a nice Argentinian style steak which he enjoyed. Our companions enjoyed chicken, good for them. I found the maduras, again, to be perfectly fine, but the rice & beans were especially great. I prefer Versailles' tres leches, but that's just because I though Larios' had too much meringue.
