My Paris-London trip..
Recently I returned from my trip in Paris and London. I had been to both cities before. This time was much about the food.
FIrstly I went to Paris. The first day I had lunch at Benoit, which I found pretty good with a good value lunch, (excellent pomerol wine by glass at 12euros). Water at 9 euros per 1L was expensive.
For the second day I booked Ledoyen the same day of the meal. The setting is magnificent, the food was excellent cooked with perfect ingredients, but nothing blew me away. The service also was the best I have ever had in Paris. The prices of the menus have changed, from what i knew and what michelin provides. Now the lunch menu costs 128 euros for starter, main, cheese and dessert. The menu decouverte is still at 250 euros. I wanted to take the lunch plus the spaghetti, but it turned out to be 140euros for the dish. So I went for the decouverte and replaced the sweetbreads with the spaghetti. You can see my review in details and photos here http://gastrotrips.blogspot.gr/2013/1... ...
Next day, I went to Pierre Gagnaire for whom I have already posted.
Then we left for London via the Eurochannel. If you have any questions about the train I will be glad to help you.
At London we had lunch at Bar Boulud, famous for its burger at Mandarin Oriental. Good but not great, as the bread was kind of hard, but the french fries were really good.
Next day, lunch at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, perfect service, best maitre d' of any other restaurant, excellent cooking and friendlier prices than Paris. It was a bit challenging to find it, as we didnt want to take a taxi( overpriced in London).
Lastly, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal again at Mandarin Oriental. I went a la carte as I wanted to try several dishes like the saffron risotto, the sous-vide cooked chicken and the tipsy cake. The tripple cooked fries were a disappointment as also was the potatos puree which we ordered extra as sides. The tipsy cake was one of the best single things I have ever eaten in my life. The service was nice, but the whole setting does not remind of a 2 michelin star place.
Thank you for reading and excuse me for the long post.
re: Bu Pun Su
I m not a friend of sweetbreads, but yes the turbot wasnt that good. Maybe I should have changed both courses with the spaghetti and a sole or bresse chicken, but I didnt want to ask more since they already did a big step letting me take the spaghetti (cant be done in decouverte portion) with the same price for the menu.
