Trying to find a restaurant to start the night off for NYE. My friends are foodies and I'm drawing a blank on cool but low key place to take them.

I went to Delicatessen in SoHo last year with my friends, there's no set menu, it's pretty casual. In fact, it was empty when we went at around 6:30/7PM. We were in and out in about 45 minutes. The food was fantastic as always. Sister restaurant is Cafeteria in Chelsea.

Fantastic? I find them both "serviceable".
Both places are basically dressed up diners.

OP - Are you looking for just ANYPLACE for a dinner on the early side that evening? Or do you want to be there at midnight? 6PM seatings will be pretty easy to find.

They serve quality comfort food, way better than a diner, I think.

Does "cool" and "low key" have a budget or neighborhood in mind? How many people?

In terms budget, probably not anything over $35 a plate. Im open in terms of neighborhoods since we'll be hopping through Soho and BK that day. It would be 3 people. We're looking to eat probably around 7 since we plan to be at a party by midnight.

Jeffrey's Grocery (part of the Little Wisco group of restaurants, including Perla, Chez Sardine, Joseph Leonard, etc) will be open and serving a la carte.
