DC restaurants - Many Closed December 26-January 1?

I am thinking of a last-minute, solo vacation to DC from December 26 through January 1. I understand the city likely will be a little deserted. A friend suggested that many restaurants might be closed. Can anyone tell me if that is likely? Thanks in advance!

Check OpenTable for the types of restaurants you want and the areas of the city/burbs that are suitable for you. Just to get an idea, I checked the 381 DC restaurants that are on open table and 348 appear to be open. Now, call first because sometimes the results on Open Table are inaccurate. But this suggests that most are open. And scanning the list, it is a wide range, from fine dining/big names like i Ricchi and 1789 and Birch and Barley and Central Michel Richard to more ethnic/neighborhood places. Which, by the way, is something DC excels at - ethnic and especially Ethiopian, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek...and those places are rarely closed except on Thanksgiving.

Thank you so much - I had not thought to check Open Table (and should have). Much appreciated!

Nah, you're fine. In a small town, you might have an issue but you're good to go in DC. Enjoy your visit!

I've been in DC during that time before but most restaurants are open.

Just took a quick look at Open Table and there are a ton of good restaurants that will be open...even ones that are good for solo diners. If you let us know your price range and what you might be looking for we can give you some more recs.

A lot of restaurants do only prix fixe menus for NYE so check out their websites.

Are you kidding? Nobody takes a vacation in this town.

But we sure wish they would! Of our current Congress - all of it - a Tom Rush lyric says it best: Having them around is like having two good men gone.

Please. Not when they're finally getting some business done.

you'll be fine. lots of people (esp. ones with kids on winter break) coming to DC to visit at that time of year = lots of places eager for their business. the only place that closes with any regularity is the Smithsonian on December 25th - before you get there.

well, the Smithsonian and Congress, but that's not much of a tourist destination anyway.

Best time of year to be here--I love the holidays when everyone leaves. You'll have a blast with the most die-hardiest of locals. You might even be able to get a seat at Little Serow!
