Organic Valley Grassmilk

To my knowledge this is the only commercially available 100 percent certified grassfed milk. On their site it says they sell it at wholefoods but I have not seen it once in my visits and I would definitely remember seeing something like that. Is it only available on the west coast? Is it seasonal?

  1. It's at my local Whole Foods. I usually buy Natural by Nature so you might want to check for that brand as well.

      Where do you reside? I do buy Nature by Nature often, but I thought it was just pastured, not 100 percent grassfed

        Baltimore. It looks like you're right though their explanation of partial grain-feeding seems legit but I guess not what you're looking for Can you call them to find out the distribution area?

    2. This brand is my go-to and is available at Natural Grocers and Whole Foods. Straus Dairy is also certified organic grass-fed.

        Maybe you missed this part on Kalona's site:
        "During the winter months when the ground is frozen solid in the Midwest, our farmers provide their cows with stored forage, typically grown on the farm or purchased from nearby farms. Depending on the farmer and the situation, winter feed may include one, some, or all of the following organic foods: roasted soybeans (for protein); corn (for energy); barley, hay, haylage, balealge, silage, or wheat."

        Also Straus Dairy is certified organic, but not exclusively grassfed:
        "Milking cows need a balanced diet, full of nutrients. The majority of their diet consists of grasses. In addition, they are fed certified organic forages, such as silage and alfalfa hay and also organic grains, such as rye, triticale, flax meal, and wheat. All purchased feeds are certified organic and are tested to be GMO free. We work closely with a dairy nutritionist, who has served on the National Organic Standards Board, to create a balanced diet for our cows, to maintain their health and enable them to produce milk."

          No, I did not miss that, Melanie, have spoken to Kalona many times about this and they addressed these issues to my satisfaction. Not only are their products USDA certified organic, they are the closest thing we can get in our market to raw milk in a retail store. It is the best tasting and highest quality I have found anywhere, including Straus.

          I am radical about organic foods and they have told me the supplemental feeding only happens in dire circumstances when the Amish farmers in their co-op have no other choice (for example, extreme weather).

          In case you missed it, you might want to look at Cornucopia's recent report on the increase in organic farming in Wisconsin (where I am from and where, in the 1980's as a member of the Madison Audubon Society Board of Directors, fought the bovine grown hormone battle). Kalona is very near this large pocket of organic farming and are doing an excellent job with a high quality product line. Their business is growing so fast they can hardly keep up with production.

            I thought you were saying Kalona was 100% grassfed, but maybe I misread your statement, since the website shows that it is not. I don't doubt that it is a great product. But since this thread is asking for 100% grassfed products, Kalona doesn't qualify during the times when the cows are fed corn and other grains.

      2. Available here in San Antonio, TX, at the fancier grocery stores (Whole Foods, Sprouts, Central Market). Organic Valley milk tastes orders of magnitude better than other commercial milk and at least as good as the raw stuff I can get.

            Organic Valley of LaFarge, Wisconsin, is one of the largest and most widely available organic dairy lines. I believe they are non-GMO Project approved as well.

          2. Do you taste the difference in grassmilk?

            I exclusively use Horizon whole milk with DHA.

              I just went to whole foods today and found grassmilk, finally! To be honest, there aren't huge taste differences between types of milk, especially organic milks. I tasted it and it is very mild and the mouthfeel is more substantial...not sure if this is because it's not homogenized but it's similar to raw milk. I drink horizon regularly as well and horizon has a certain aftertaste that I think is due to its ultra gives a slight "cheesy" or cooked milk flavor. I personally enjoy it but it may or may not be what people are looking for
