Frozen Poi

Went to a kalo event held at the State Capitol on Friday. Taro Brand was handing out samples of their poi, both the regular stuff from the plastic bags sold at stores and their frozen version, which not so widely available. A taste of the frozen poi was an eye-opener: very fresh tasting. Costs about $50.00 (including postage) to send five frozen packages packed in Styrofoam to the mainland, but it might make a great Christmas gift to some homesick Hawaiian.

Also got to sample fresh poi from Waipio Valley on the Big Island. It was very, very good. Apparently being served at Highway Inn, Poi and Highway Inn's squid luau would be a treat anytime, but would be outstanding comfort food after any kind of surgery where you have to eat soft foods.

They sell the Taro Brand frozen stuff at Marukai, but it's not cheap.
