ISO Great Food Trucks on Oahu and Maui

itryalot Dec 7, 2013 03:40 AM

Clean and great food are the key.
I have heard people swear by Giovanni's on Oahu, but others say it is overpriced and you eat amidst a sea of flies.

Eaten many times at Giovanni's in North Shore for their fab garlic shrimp and I've never had to deal with flies.

Jawz truck at Makena beach in Maui is damn good after swimming all day...

Never heard of Jawz; I am going to Yelp them.

Itryalot, I have to disagree a little bit with Beach Chick on Jawz tacos. If you are at Big Beach and you want something right there, the tacos can hit the spot. But mostly because they really your only choice. I wouldn't make a special trip for them. The tacos are full of white rice and the fish is shredded. They are a bit overpriced. You can get much better fish tacos at Coconuts in Kihei or Fish Market Maui in Honokowai.

I've been hearing about a Korean taco truck in Kihei on Maui lately. Can't recall the name, maybe Gogi? Its supposed to be pretty good. Also look for roadside huli huli chicken stands.

If you go to Trip Advisor and do a search of the forums you will find lots of threads on food trucks in the Oahu and Maui forums. Oh, I recognize your name from TA, so maybe you already found your food trucks! Happy eating!

The Gogi (one letter off from the famous Kogi in LA, suspicious...) web site hasn't been updated in months & their Twitter feed hasn't been updated recently either.

A Yelp tip indicates they have closed.

Google your way to Eat the Street, a monthly Honolulu event. If you're there when it's happening, don't miss it.

No big loss. Not the best trucks usually.

My favorite shrimp truck on the north shore is Macky's... It's clean and has running water to wash your hands after meal.

See my review on this subject.

there are two food trucks on the mountain side of kapahulu on oahu: magoo's pizza and blue water shrimp.

camile's on wheels is really really ono, but i think she was too good and got booked for catering so much that the truck is on standby.

Mobile pizza vendor Outrigger Pizza for dinner last night. Smaller Naples inspired types of pies, around $10. Lilikoi Pork & Sausage with Mushroom hit the spot. Usually don't do pizza on Maui since we are from NYC but this was good. They rotate locations regularly--web site has the schedule.

It's been my experience in other cities that the great food trucks go where the office workers are and do a brisk lunch business, in order to survive, so on Maui they are usually far from where the tourists are. Perhaps the reason why Crying Thaiger, Gogi BBQ, others have closed.

The pizza place looks good as a quick bite to eat.

Geste's shrimp truck near the entrance to MCC on the harbor side of the road. Best hotnspicy garlic shrimp on the island and better than Giovanni's at the North Shore of Oahu

Fairly recent addition to the O'ahu lineup is Wurst Wagen...delicious fresh bratwurst made by two German guys. A German friend say the taste is EXACTLY right from her childhood. Have gotten several orders packaged for home use as well as lunch from the truck. YUM!

Honestly, if you want Garlic Shrimp, I'd go to Tita's (Not a truck) before I go to Giovanni. Everything you have heard about the flies is probably accurate.

First I've heard of that name too but they have great reviews on yelp.

Tita's has very good garlic shrimp..not as much garlic as Gio's..never had any issues with flies in the many years of going to Gio's in NS...maybe just got lucky.
