Seen Matt's Big Breakfast lately?
I dragged someone all the way downtown, only to find that MBB has moved slightly. But, okay, I haven't been there in a couple of years, but I somehow remember it being a pleasantly bright, cheery, low-key, homey place. Am I wrong? Because in its new set-up, it's dark, industrial-looking, raucous, and claustrophobic. (No, we didn't eat there; we went elsewhere.)
Did you step inside? I don't find the new space at all as you've described. It's far more spacious than the old space a block to the south and generally well-lit. Plus, it has its own restrooms. The original Matt's had to send customers over to the Coronado Hotel when certain needs arose.
I've eaten at the new location several times. I'm not sure how it could be considered *more* claustrophobic than the original spot, which had about 30 sq feet of unoccupied floor space.
The space has a different look, to be sure. It's not quite as bright inside (probably due to lack of the south-facing windows), but I've never felt it to be dark and uninviting.
Ernie and her crew still serve up warm hospitality and food made with care, so it's going to take a bit more than a shift from homey, vintage decor to a look incorporating corrugated metal to keep me from going.
